Bump on Outer Ear

I just noticed my son has a small black and blue bump on his outer ear. Its in the cartilage, and can be seen from the front of his ear and the back. The bump is hard, like a pebble.

My first thought is that it could just be a bruise, but that doesnt explain why its hard, and sorta rounded. It doest seem to hurt him. I asked him if it bothers him at all and he says no.

I thought about taking him the doctor. But we just all got over colds and the thought of bringing him to the germ-factory is unappealing. Unless, of course, its gets bigger or darker.

Any idea on what this could be?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We did go to the Doctors office. Our pediatrician was out that day and we saw the APRN. (Who we love, and see frequently.) She was a little baffled by the bump. She thought cyst, until she shined the light on it, and its clearly black. They she thought it could be a build up of blood. Although, I dont recall him hitting his head at all.
The next step would be to see a surgeon to have it removed. But, now that you moms mention it, maybe I should seek the opinion of a dermatologist. Hmmm....

** Additional update**** I took him to see his pediatrician who has been a doctor for 20+ years. She is also baffled. We made an appointment to see a dermatologist. Next available appointment is not until April. :( In the meantime, its keeping the same shape and doesnt seem to be changing at all. I'm keeping a daily watch on it, and I will update with any changes...
Ty all for your concern.

Crystal,
My advice is call the office. Let them decide. Waiting on something like that makes ME nervous.

Good luck,
M.

I would take him to the doctor. It may just be a bruise, but the outside of the ear seems like a strange spot to have an injury like that. Good luck.

Probably would be best to have it checked by your pediatrician, at least call about it. It will most likely be something minor like a blood blister, but you never know. (sorry, I'm a nurse so the worst case scenario always jumps to mind for me)

If you're super worried about germs (who isn't this time of year), I'd either call the dr. or, just make an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist.

how about taking him to a dermatologist. no germs there, and it is a skin thing.

Call the doctor or nurse. Tell them you don't want to bring him in. They should have an idea for you of what it is! A good doctor will have an idea and tell you over the phone.

I would definitely make a trip to the pediatrician. Since you don't seem to know how he got this bruise I would see a doctor. Good luck.

It sounds like he bumped it and it developed blood inside the bump. I would definately take him in soon. Any damage to the ear could result in cauliflower ear.
