A friend says she goes to college for free (government pays) because the college said that her course nursing was in need of people so she doesn't have to pay. Her english is not great so maybe I misunderstood but is it true, you can do a course for free ?

Don't go to the paysites for FAFSA. Here is a site you should go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ if you qualify, you may get the year free or you may get some financial assiatance. Every year you do have to refile and it is based on your tax returns.
You can also check in the financial aide office and inquire about scholarships and other grants. I got a scholarship for nursing from a hospital and had to sign a contract with the hospital to work for them for 3 years. To me that was great, I didn't have to search for a job when I got done and knew I had a job and was getting OJT for 3 years.
Another option is to go to the unemployment/employment office, they have 1 to 2 years training programs for people who qualify. You don't have to be on unemployment either. They offer a lot of things, like business management, computers, electronis... and you get a certificate when your done. I believe they may offer nursing as well.
Good luck

Yes it is possible to get grants, merit awards & financial aid package to cover entire tuition & other costs. It depends on factors like the school, income (must fill out FAFSA form), how high you score on college entrance exams & if you can prove that you are a good investment.
Also depends on your career goal & there IS a great demand for teachers & nurses.

M.,

I have not heard of this unless that she is on possible welfare or such. My one sister was going to college at the expense of the government. But my other sister is in nursing college right now and she was not given any support from the government let alone to go for free.

You can go for free to be a teacher, nurse, and other professions that are in high demand. But there is a catch. For example the government will pay for you to get your teachers degree but you have to be will to teach for so many years in under privileged areas where there is problems. To get a free education for nursing you can get help from the government or some hospitals will pay and you need to be willing to give so many years to work for them. You still will get paid but you will work where they need you.
You can also get money from the government to go to school if you do not make very much money. Money that you do not need to pay back but I think you can only make under $25,000 for a family with one child. I think the website is www.Fasa.com . But not 100% sure.
But I do not think there is just free courses you can take at your community college.

I am not aware of any degrees that are free outright. But I do know that there are government programs that exist for professions such as nursing that reimburse you or pay off a percentage of your student loans if you work in a facility designated as having a "critical shortage" for 2 or more years after graduation. It is something you must apply for and I believe it can be quite competitive. You can learn more about it if you google "nurse education loan repayment program".
