Hi Ladies,
I've been on the Pill for 23 years and want to get off all hormonal birth control. My husband and I have also decided we don't want any more kids. I saw a commercial for the Essure procedure, and I was wondering if any of you have had this done. Also, how bad is the procedure they have to do three months later to make sure it worked?
Thanks for your help!

The deciding factor for us was that the vasectomy was covered under our insurance & the Essure wasn't, so hubby got snipped. I think overall, in terms of procedure, recovery & insurance, vasectomy was simpler, plus hubby got a chance to be a hero & lay on the sofa recovering for the weekend ;)

I didn't have this done myself, but I did look into it with my doctor. It seems a lot easier than having your tubes tied, I guess. Some doctors' offices do this without anesthesia (but my doctor said she recommended some anesthesia as it could be "quite uncomfortable." I assume this means they've had to peel people off the ceiling after they've had this procedure...) She also said that there will probably be side effects while you are healing (like pain, bleeding, severe cramping, nausea, fainting). I gave it some thought and then I decided... I was pregnant twice, had natural delivery twice, breastfed, still have to work full-time... isn't it time for my HUSBAND to do something invasive, embarrassing and painful? So he went and got a vasectomy! (He wasn't happy about it, but then I threatened just to go off birth control and have a whole bunch of kids like that 18 kids and counting family, and he saw the light pretty quickly.) I would recommend making someone else have the invasive procedure whenever possible. =) Good luck!

Hi C.,

I had the procedure a little over a month ago and it wasn't painful at all. The "side effects" are limited to cramps, not worse than a normal period and heavy bleeding, which I'm used to. In about two months I will have an ultrasound to see if the area is completely blocked, if not I will have to continue to use another form of birth control. However, after no more than 4 months I will not have to worry about birth control again. I hope this helps. At the time of your consultation you MD will show you a film and it will tell you all about Essure, the patient testimonials are very accurate.

Good Luck,
D.

I used diaphragm for year, very successfully. It is not very popular in the USA but I am not very updated on that. For me the inconvenience of inserting it (not more complicated than using tampon) was worth it against the possibility of using hormones or having unwanted pregnancy.

my aunt did it last year...loved it and had not one single complaint about the procedure or anything involved in the process.
