Hi Mamas!
Those moms that have older boys, can any of you tell me if your sons might have had nipple pain. My 12yo is complaining that his nipples really, really hurt. I vaguely remember his doctor saying this may happen during puberty. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks,
S.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the confirmations, mamas! I'll have him check his chest for bumps/lumps too.

Yup,
hormones, physical development - all can cause discomfort.
Sounds weird - but try ice packs - worked for mine.
Let your son know that it will pass - my 15 year old assures me that it went away.

Good Luck
God Bless

Totally normal. We checked with the doctor when my son started to go through puberty a year and a half ago.

I actually recall this, both boys complained briefly about it. As always, if it continues see the doctor again.

Do you feel any lumpiness behind the nipple (to avoid drama, have your boy do this to himself)? If so, then it is gynecomastia...that is when hormonal levels of estrogen spike up in boys during puberty, causing a small amount of breast tissue to develop. Just as when girls have their periods, it can be tender and cause chest pain and/or nipple pain.

It is totally normal, and it goes away in most boys. If it totally uncomfortable a warm pack can help alleviate the tenderness.

About six months ago, I took my 12 year old son to the doctor for exactly the same thing. The doctor said it was normal for some boys to experience this pain at puberty. And then, just as the doctor predicted, his other breast got soad about two weeks later. Both breast were soar and sensitive for about four to six week and then it went away. I did not do anything in terms of treatment but be patient and comforting. The pain will go away eventually, hopefully, sooner rather than later. Good luck and God Bless, Mama!

Yes, my son went through this when he was starting pubert. Unfortunately, he had just witnessed me going through a bout with breast cancer, so it magnified the issue. We took him to the doctor and she checked him out and was able to assure him this is very normal for an 11 year old boy.
