My son just turned 9 and came to me two nights ago and showed me this lump under his right nipple. It moves around and he says it is not sore. I hope that it is nothing serious. Does anybody know what this might be? It almost feels like a fatty pad. His left nipple feels normal. I am not for sure if I should take him to the doctor or wait and see if it goes away. Does anybody have any suggestions? I will probably still take him to the doctor so I can set my mind at ease.

What can I do next?

Definitely see a dr. It could be a little infected sweat gland or small cyst that is moving around (not uncommon). It may not be sore now, but could easily worsen and become inflammed. I would call immediately and make an appointment for a medical evaluation.

JL,
My doctor has a sign in his office that I will never forget. It says, "The five most dangerous words in the English language: MAYBE IT WILL GO AWAY." Yes, I definitely, definitely would take him to the doctor! What have you got to lose? You only stand to gain peace of mind, or knowing if there IS something wrong.

I urgently suggest u take him to his peditrician immediately. Do not make an appointment bring him in and insist that the doctor checks him out.

Hopefully, and probably nothing serisou, possibly calcium deposits, but if it is serious you do not want to wait one hour. The sooner you find out what it is the better off he will be.

God Bless Merry Christmas

I'm in Blackwell, OK which is about 1 1/2 hrs from you, my son's chest was raised on one side around his nipple/rib area, almost like someone's fist was sticking out from the other side, anyway i was referred to childrens hosp in okc and they took xrays, etc etc...it ended being nothing thankfully, said he might have a little calcium buildup but its nothing to worry about over time it should correct itself, this was about a year ago when this happened, he still has it, i can't tell any change.

so with that being said...for your piece of mind i would have it checked out, always better safe than sorry, if your regular doctor can't tell you much INSIST on him referring you to children's hospital, they deal with stuff like that on a daily basis....in fact the doctor i seen said if my regular doctor (really tacky dr., all i cared about was knowing if it was a problem or not) told me my regular doctor should have known what it was and not had me have to drive to okc, i would have drove across the country if need be, but anyway do what your instint tells you and if you want a 2nd opinion insist on the doctor sending you to childrens. Any other questions feel free to holler

Since it is not hurting him it might just be an infection in a lefnod(sp). You need to take him the doctor and let them look at it. Also since it moves around it shouldn't be nothing serious. I get them a lot in my armpits and they are just infections that need some meds.

Wow, I am pretty surprised about everyone's responses. I am a physician, so feel that I can offer some much needed advice. This moveable "knot" is very common, and very normal at his age. The medical term for it is called "gynecomastia". Boys that are about to start entering puberty, will develop breast-buds for a short-time. Especially if they are already a bit heavy to begin with.
Let me quote some literature:

"Estradiol is produced from testosterone in male puberty as well as female, and male breasts often respond to the rising estradiol levels. This is termed gynecomastia. In most boys, the breast development is minimal, similar to what would be termed a "breast bud" in a girl, but in many boys, breast growth is substantial. It usually occurs after puberty is underway, may increase for a year or two, and usually diminishes by the end of puberty. It is increased by extra adipose tissue if the boy is overweight.

Although this is a normal part of male puberty for perhaps half of boys, breast development is usually as unwelcome as upper lip hair in girls, and can be removed surgically if the boy's distress is substantial."

I would go ahead and make an appt to see his pedi at some point in the next couple of weeks, but try not to stress out until then.

Hope this helps

sounds like a lipoma -- fatty tissue. It's the things that don't hurt you need to be the most concerned about. Usually cancer only starts to hurt when it's too advanced to do anything about.

I'm not sure why many of you (judging from the questions I've seen on this site) younger mothers (my son is 26) are scared to get a definitive diagnosis. Better to find out than wait it out -- especially if the lump is still there after two weeks (plenty of time for a bruise to heal).

I work in health care and I see lots of issues that could have been resolved quickly, if the patient had not been scared to find out! Now they're facing much more serious health care ...

This could be a lot of things. IT could be nothing, it could be an infection, it could be a swollen lymphnode, it could be cancer, it could be a tumor that is a sign of low testosterone in men (hubby had one) . But here is the most important thing. If it is serious and you do nothing, you lose him. If it is nothing and you do something serious ( like GO TO THE DOCTOR) then you are out $30 for a co pay and an afternoon. Which are you willing to lose?

I had ovarian cancer in 04. my symptoms where so subtle, that only on dr. believed me. I went to my internist, gastro, both checked me out and said you are fine. I said not sure and went to my GYN, she said I don't see or find anything, (blood work normal, ultra sound normal) BUT, there is some fluid on your belly and YOU KNOW YOUR BODY BETTER THAN ANYONE PATIENT I HAAVE. I wish you could teach all of my patients to listen to the changes in their bodies. Even the oncologist, said to my Dr. you are over reacting. I think she just needs a hystorectomy and will be fine. I had an Orange sized malignant tumor inside my ovary. HAD I LISTENED TO THEM and NOT TO MYSELF, I WOULD BE DEAD RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We only get one shot at our health and once it's gone it's gone. Trust me I have been there. Don't play, this is your baby. Please let us know how this turns out, I am praying for the best. I would be there with my 9 year old today.

It's most likely nothing, but take him to the doctor to be sure! There's no harm in wasting a doctor visit, but there could be harm in not doing. I pray for the best.
Have a fabulous day and god bless!!
