advice please mommas, my DS has had this stubborn umbilical granuloma since his cord fell off. it has gotten better, then worse, more irritated, then better, etc; but never infected. The ped has changed her recommendations for treatment at home, first antibiotics, now using alcohol, but to no avail, it keeps oozing and wont heal for good. I am starting to worry as he is beginning to crawl and spending the time doing his baby pushups it is getting more irritated, and soon it will be summer and then we have sand boxes and the beach... ;) and he is able to protest my treatments more effectively as he gets bigger of course... can anyone speak to how to best deal with this? will it ever go away on its own or do we have to use silver nitrate or even surgery? i am thinking of trying another doctor as the first doc to observe it at 3 weeks recommended the silver nitrate at 2 mos... there has to be a way to resolve it for good, isnt there???

This product is made mostly of powdered goldenseal root.
My daughter had an oozing belly button still at two months, or maybe it was four, and the dr. used the silver nitrate on it. She cried, yes, but it was an over and done with deal. I wouldn't worry about using it. Just do it and then you won't have to worry anymore about infections and can enjoy the summer.
My daughter had the same thing. At 4 months her pedicatrician used silver nitrate on it. She screamed but it healed not long after that. Now her belly button is perfect. I couldn't deal with the oozing any longer.
I would try some Betadine on it first. Maybe salt water soaking.
I know it isn't the same, but when I was 21, I had a belly piercing that got infected over like 6 weeks, and I was constantly putting neosporin on it to no avail. I let it grow back.
I had it redone again a few years later, and Betadine (combined with salt water from the beach) healed it up in a week! I have heard many other people say the same type of thing about saltwater. Betadine is surgery prep, and great stuff!
