Something Weird in My 4 Monthes Belly Button.

My son is 4 months old. I was looking in his belly button today and saw something black. I thought it was dirt or a piece of clothing from his ulfit. But it would not come out. I started to try to get a better look with some tweezers and try to pull it out. It seemed like it was connected. I didn't want to pull real hard and he wasn't crying about it. I looked at it closer and it kinda looks like a stitch. When he was born he had to go to the NicU for an iv in his belly button. Would they of put a stitch in his belly button after taking the iv out. They did not tell me they did. And if they did would it still be in his belly button after 4 monthes? I'm really freaking out about it. Thinking it might cause an infection. :(

What can I do next?

Just ask the dr. the next time you are there. Don't pull on it, and it won't cause an infection. Put a little Neosporin on in right now, since you've been pulling on it. The dr. will tell you what it is -- nothing to worry about. Even if it's a stitch, it's easily removed.

This is why God invented pediatricians. :)
Good luck! Hopefully it's fine.

We have no real idea. Call your pediatrician and set up an appointment. Stop touching the belly button. It won't irritate him unless you fiddle with it.

With my eldest daughter, she had something that sounds similar although it wasn't black. It was like a nubby sort of gritty... thingie. It was a granule. It was naturally forming. The doctor performed a procedure to remove it and cauterize it, which worked except my daughter was allergic to the chemical used in cauterization.

Anyway. It could be something like that.

It is entirely possible that it could be a stitch, although I don't understand why they didn't suture with a dissolvable one. If your child is not exhibiting any signs of an infection - fever, irritability, poor appetite, oozing at the location, etc. I wouldn't stress about it too much. Just take him to the doctor and have them remove it.

I take it this is your first baby. Everything will be ok. Kids are really resilient and before you know it he will walking and talking.

Hope this helps

It could be a cyst from the umbilical cord and the black is it "dying" or dried blood. My son had one and it eventually went away. Clean it at least two times a day with just a wet cloth (or else it starts to get really smelly). If it's bothersome, you could ask your pediatrician to "burn" it with silver nitrate.

Could be something left over from the umbilical cord? Could be something else. I'd have it looked at - stop touching it, stop pulling it out, and don't panic. If it doesn't appear to be infected, perhaps you can wait until the next month's check up. At least call the pediatrician and talk to the nurse. If you have a good cell phone camera, take a picture and email it to them - it may not be clear enough for them to see, but it couldn't hurt. Otherwise go in and be seen. Babies sometimes need an extra visit from the regular checkups. It's part of the deal.

Call the pediatrician to be sure, but I know my little guy had black in his belly button for a long time. It had something to do with the stuff they put on it to make it dry out, not sure what it was called. But it took a long time to go away (possibly also because I was reluctant to clean his belly button).

Good luck and try not to worry.

Call your doctor and ask, this is well beyond our knowledge.

My son had this until he was about 6 months old. Then it went away. It was from the umbilical cord. The doc said to leave it alone and just clean him as usual. Do not pick at it since you could end up causing a core that can get infected.
