5 Week Old Boy Grunting

My little boy loves to grunt ALOT. The doctor says that it is normal and I do believe him, but would like to know if you have experienced your babies grunting a lot. Was it normal or was there something medically behind it, like acid reflux. I hope they outgrew it early on. He does grunt more at night than during the day. He also grunts more when he starts to get hungry. I do have him sleeping in his swing a lot because he doesn't grunt as much. He also doesn't grunt as much when he is laying on me. One other thing, not sure it is related, when I do burb him after breastfeeding he does spit up a little (not much at all...mostly enough just to run down my hand) when he burbs.

What can I do next?

The small amount of spit up is totally normal. The grunting just may be his way of communicating. My baby girl was noisy like that. She made all kind of sounds. She didn't seem uncomfortable, she was just noisy. She's 8mo now and is not doing it anymore. Some babies whine and cry a lot, some hum and coo, others grunt. I think it sounds normal

I think it's completely normal for babies to make weird noises. My son sounded like a monkey every time he made a BM. It was the weirdest and funniest thing. I had to warn people about it when they baby sat or I would freaked out phone calls thinking he was having trouble breathing. My little one will be a big 4 in less than a month. I have another baby boy coming in July. Boys rock! Enjoy!

My son did this. I think it's normal and may not signify any medical issues...but my son did end up having reflux. He also squeaked when he breathed in and it turned out he had tracheomalacia [his trachea was still soft and would collapse a little]....but if your son is just grunting and not squeaking you have nothing to worry about. He'll outgrow it probably before 6 months and definitely by a year

My son is 7 weeks old and does the same thing. It's just baby noises and nothing to worry about.
Don't worry about the spitting up either. As long as it's just a little and not his entire dinner and he's gaining weight and wetting/pooping normally everything is fine!

Its no biggie.
I think boys grunt more.
I have a girl and a boy... my son, was a grunter. He grunted whenever he was hungry or whenever he was about to poop, or tired.
He was noisy... grunting a lot. But by his grunting, I knew what he wanted or was going to do ie: poop.

Spitting up is also normal. After feeding... don't lay him down, keep him upright so the liquid does not come back out.

Your son is just a grunter. He is communicating. My son was like that as a baby. He grew out of it as he got older.

My son, was grunting since he was born. In the hospital, I could tell when the Nurse was bringing my son to me, because even as they were walking down the hallway to my room, I could actually HEAR my son GRUNTING all the way down the hall until they got to my room and gave him to me for nursing. The closer he got to my room and then "saw" me, the louder he grunted! The nurses said he's a smart boy!
And no, my son's grunting was not because of reflux.

All the best,
Susan

I don't know if this is what you mean by grunt, by my son who is now 4 mos was always a noisy, grunty breather. I asked the ped about it at every appointment because it always worried me and he said he was fine. At about 2 1/2 mos he stopped breathing like that and isn't grunty at all now... Hope that helps!

All of my kids have done this I have a 6 year old and 3 year old boy and a 5 month old girl. The dr told us it was from reflux they all took zantac as babies (girl is still taking it), there is a couple other wasys to check for reflux, his breath might smell a little funny and sometimes it may sound like he is gasping for air. Hope this helps.

Is your son mine?!! LOL! My little baby boy does the exact same thing! He is now 9 weeks old and doesn't do it nearly as much as he did when he was a newborn. It kinda freaked us out too, because our other son didn't grunt at all, but I guess some babies just make stranger noises than others. Our little guy also toots ALOT, & they are so loud you can hear them way across the room, but that too has subsided as he gets older.
