Jimmy Kimmel proposed that Nov 17th would be National Unfriend Day (2nd annual).

I am participating--so far I've cut out 30 some names, and I am not even to the letter "L" yet!

Who am I cutting?
* Anyone I have never met in real life (except for 2 people who I know thru mutual friends) - yes, that means any of my Mamapedia FB friends too (hubby and I agreed that we'd limit our exposure)
* Anyone who habitually posts status updates about how drunk they are
* Anyone who probably wouldn't talk to me if they saw me on the street
* Anyone who has made comments about how much time I spend on FB
* Anyone who habitually uses my FB wall to start fights with other people

Not doing it for spite, but to simplify my life

Anyone else in? Who would you cut?

What can I do next?

  • this with your friends

So What Happened?

Yeah, when I first started using FB 5 years ago I was VERY selective about my friends, but over time a bunch of people from my school ended up friending me, and I was just like, "What the hay..." And eventually I had almost 300 people! Crazy--that is no where NEAR the number of my TRUE friends!

Well damn, and I thought we had something special, too!

I suppose this means we're off the Christmas Card List as well?

I wonder if "defriend" and "unfriend" will make it into the dictionary.

I don't defriend people. But I do hide people's posts from my wall so I don't have to see it. I've had to hid people who are offensive and most often times racist. The reason I don't defriend is one is friends with a lot of other friends and one is my mom's neighbor, so I don't want to start any drama with them on why I defriended them.

I have been on FB a couple years, and to me it was still rather new to the world and I was already behind. I set mine to friends only, so not a lot of people can see it. I have only requested "friends" with about 6 people, and dont accept every request I get even from people I know. If I havent seen this person for a few years, was never really friends with her in the first place, so I have no desire to see what she says and dont imagine she cares much for what I might post. I have people on my friend list I have never met, but in online in forums and such we have talked a lot and have common interests and feel we could be friends if we had the chance to meet. They are fun, so I enjoy hearing from them. I have a few friends I know on FB, and some people I went to school with I have reconnectred with after a lot of years. . I have a few family members but dont hear from most and dont really know them very well. And a few of my grand daughter's dad's family have requested friends and I accepted just for her sake to keep in touch and keep the lines of communication open. We arent necessarily friends, but we try to be friendly and have a sweet little girl in common and its for her sake I want to stay in touch. Id like to be better friends, but sometimes the situation just doesnt let it happen. So all in all I have 101 people on my FB frends list. I have one friend blocked so no one else is subjected to her language. I like when my son posts pictures of food. He is a great cook and I like seeing what he made. I dont like when some people get into personal fights and share way more than we need to know. Jimmy Kimmels reasons to unfriend someone made me laugh, until the very last one worth 50 points. "If they are your M." .. And it was my son who had posted it for us all to see. So far today, he hasnt unfriended me. lol

I do it on a regular basis...about twice a year. I also don't respond to game requests, family tree requests, etc.

Since I'm 49, I don't ask to "friend" any of the younger crowd. But I really enjoy when they ask me! Love when it's a genuine request & not just adding me as one more conquest.....

Ahh...I went through them a bit ago, and did some cleaning.

Mine was more for the Fact I am using FB to Do all of my Occupy information and material. Because that is mainly what I am using it for now days.

I knew not everyone was going to want to get EVERY post about the movement...SO I was trying to be nice. A few have come back and asked to refriend them...and I have.

I only unfriend when they are being nasty. Or are doing more then their fair of lurking....On a daily basis..Which has only happened twice so far:)

I look through my list periodically and basically anybody I wouldn't want to have dinner with or haven't had dinner never got on the list and anyone I no longer care for is gone. I'm pretty selective with my list to start with but sometimes friendships go south. I had one where this guy starting causing trouble IRL with mutual friends and I just quietly defriended him quite a while ago.

I clean up my friend list about every 6 mos. Some accumulate just long enough to catch up with and then after you've finished catching up it's time to let them go. I have plenty of family I've blocked, younger people that just seem annoying to me and I dont need the drama.... it's very easy to delete them. I've never, ever had anyone ask me about it later. I'm sure most people feel the same way, most would never even notice you were missing. FB is a crowd, it's easy to get lost in or its easy to magnify everything and get stressed. You have to use it in a good way and not let it get out of hand. I didnt axe anyone today, I thought today was the great american smoke out day. I dont usually watch Kimmel.

LOL! I can barely get onto MP without my computer going down, much less spend time on FB figuring out who to "unfriend"! Meanwhile, the friends who write me and who I write are the most important of them, so I won't worry about it! Jimmy Kimmell can enjoy doing the work for his "project"!

HA! HA! HA! HA! I wish I would have known! I totally would have cleaned out my FB friends list! Actually the people I would really want to clean out, I can't without starting a war. I have family who likes to pick fights over nothing, so I just ignore them, or hide them and their posts from my feed. I would REALLY like to delete them, but that would cause a war in the family.
I think I have about 100 people in my friends list, but they are all people I know personally. I've moved around a lot and like to keep in touch with people I've known over the years, well the ones I liked anyway! *laugh*
