My 10 month baby boy started to cry at night with apparent reason...It's more like a complaint, he doesn't even open his eyes, stand up or sit down in the crib... I go to his room, pat him, put his paci and he stops... when I leave the room he starts to cry again... It happened 2 nights in the past 4 days and twice at night... I do not want to always blame the teething process... but could it be that or is there something else??? Thanks!!! N.

What can I do next?

If he's not waking all of the way up, maybe just stand there and see if he can settle on his own. Sounds like he's having nightmares about bottles or boobies disappearing from the planet. Sometimes they do a little cry jag that stops as quickly as it started.

Pinpointing the problem is like trying to figure out what is giving you a headache. It's almost impossible but some ideas could be food intolerance (something giving stomachache or gas), behavioral (you keep coming in), bad dreams, acid reflux, or coming down with an illness.

It could certainly be teething, or it could be an attachment "issue". I've heard sometimes at that age they cry out at night to make sure you are still around. He might just need some extra reassurance and loving from you. I don't know of anything to help, I don't think it's really a "problem" unless it becomes disruptive for you and your family.

Probably he is hungry- are you nursing-I hope!- then look at your diet.
If not really really check what you are feeding him.
best, k

Sounds like teething pain perhaps. When someone is there to distract it is less noticeable. Perhaps try one night to give him children's ibuprofin (if your doctor OK's it). My kids had no relief from Tylenol (acetomeniphen) but Ibuprofin (brand name Advil but I bought the CVS generic) worked for 8 hours for them. This might be a way to see if pain is the cause. Either that or cold cloths/teethers to suck on.
If it is not pain, then there is a great book by Dr. Ferber on amazon.com or your local library called "How to solve your child's sleep problems". I used his methods for sleeping through the night at 6 months, for staying in bed when moving to a crib, and for reading up on true sleep problems like night terrors and sleep walking.
Good luck for you and your little guy.
