What's a Great Way to Mark a Milestone Birthday?

40 is still a few years away for me, but I was thinking about doing something "spectacular" in 2014 to make my birthday memorable. Have any of you done something like that? What was it? Any good ideas? I'm not crazy for heights so that probably leaves out bungee jumping, skydiving, etc. I thought about parasailing (yes, I know what I just said about heights, but I'm not scared to try parasailing.) I've even thought about training for a marathon, although I'm not exactly a runner. Any ideas would be welcome! Thanks.

What can I do next?

My husband just bought a 4 lap Rusty Wallis ride along at Texas Motor Speedway for my daughter. She is going to really dig going 200mph on the racetrack. They put you in the firesuit and everything. That screams milestone to me.
I've never been out of the country, on a cruise, or to Jamaica (Big Reggae fan) so for me, a fantasy birthday would be to go on a carribean cruise.

My husband booked a luxurious 7 day cruise in the Spring for my 40th. I won't be anywhere around for people to say Happy Birthday you old fart! LOL! Or how does it feel to be over the hill? Haha. We will be on the road before then. Yes we included the kids...I want them to be with me to celebrate :) Have fun brainstorming and planning. You go girl!

I was also going to say cruise...ha! Or any vacation really. See if you can swing a couple's trip or just a trip with girlfriends would be great. My friend is turning 50 next month and we are all going on a cruise together and we'll be in Jamaica on her birthday so we're hoping to do a really fun something like maybe a rum factory tour! Either way at least she'll be welcoming 50 with sun and fun! I have 5 more years until 40 but I'm already thinking about travel options! ;)

My 3 best friends from college (and I) turn 40 in 2012. We're planning on meeting somewhere - probably CA - for a weekend spa getaway! We live in VA, NJ, FL and HI. I can't wait for that weekend!!

Mine was pretty simple. We went to Disneyland as we always do for birthdays. The one thing I wanted though was a special picture taken. My husband and I had gone to Disneyland on my 30th birthday. I was 6 months pregnant with my first child. I took a picture standing in front of the Tomorrowland sign showing off my big belly. I wanted a picture on my exact birthday 10 years later with all 3 of my children. Of course a huge rain storm went through so we had to postpone by 10 days past my actual birthday. But 10 years and 10 days later I got my picture of me showing off my 3 amazing chidren standing in front of the Tomorrowland sign :) We had an amazing day that day!
I didn't want all the hoopla. I just didn't see it as that big of a deal. It was another year on the calendar to me.

I went to Bali.

I figured if I had to turn 40 I would do it somewhere exotic. I wanted somewhere that was so very different than my every day life. But not so different that it would be scary different.

I spent the day of my 40th birthday in the jungle, learning to meditate with a Balinese Hindu spiritual leader sitting in a temple along side of a stream watching those stupid little gray monkeys throw poop at trees.

Except for the monkeys and the poop it was magical.

I will be 40 in 2014 as well and was thinking the same thing! I have told my husband that I want to start saving for a family trip to Hawaii!!! I know it may not happen but we are going to shoot for it! My back up plan is a spa weekend with some girlfriends.
