My son's middle name is terrible. Its his paternal grandfather's first name and my husband's middle name. Truly an awful very old fashion name. However you really don't use middle names for anything and if you include it at all a middle initial is perfectly acceptable for paperwork. So I say go for the name that ties the generations together.

I agree with Retta. The first name is the name you choose for your child. It's the name you like and the one he will always be called. The middle name doesn't really get used, accept for special occasions (read as he graduates high school), and it's meaningful to all if you name him after his father and grandfather. That alone makes it special and will probably be something he says with honor.

In our family, middle names are names to be proud of. Even if they didn't immediately flow, we grew to love them because of their meaning.

I'd name him Caleb Clement because you want to call him Caleb, and Clement is meaningful to you.

I like both very much. With the family significance, I'd go with Caleb Clement.

I love the name Caleb and it was one of my top choices for one of my sons. I don't think middle names really matter that much in terms of being old fashioned, etc. as most people don't use them in everyday life. Go with Clement if you like the significance. If you go with Matthew, I'd spell it with two Ts as that's the conventional spelling and much more common.

We did a unique to the child first name and a family related middle name. Both my kids through the years has to write in school about how they got their name and both loved that we picked their first name for a specific reason either the meaning or because we loved the name and when they were born it just fit them. They also loved being able to talk about the person they were named after and how much they liked being part of the family with a name from a favorite family member.

Caleb Mathew flows better but being a family name Caleb Clement isn't bad...just try saying it in an exasperated tone or yelling it out the back door. :-)

I prefer (the sound of) Caleb Mathew. That's not to say I don't like the name Clement - I actually think it's a really cool name, and I love family name significance (we did that wherever we could).

The thing is - we have found that our kid's middle names never come up in conversation. So if you like it, go ahead and use it.

I use one of my children's middle names quite frequently, only because I love the sound of it with the first name - it just rolls off the tongue and it's kind of a nick name at this point.

Otherwise, middle names are just names you see now and then on forms don't you find? You must have found that with your older child's name. Perhaps your kids are still really young.

Mine are teens. Their middle names never come up. The last time was a document at the high school level where kids made grades (academic) and they listed their full names. There was a lot of 'older' traditional names there, so I think a lot of family names get used.

If this helps - my teen boys actually like being named after grandfathers etc. Other older cousins have been as well, and they like the connection.

It’s how the first name goes with the last name. I work in HR and it’s confusing for databases if people have two first names like John Kelly or Mark David. The more unique name the better! Clement is cool Middle name and will act as identifer.

After giving my older son a family name from my husband's side for his middle name it only felt right to use one from my family for my younger sons middle name. The two I had to choose from were Everett and Eugene, neither of which I particularly cared for, but I went with Eugene and not only was my grandfather extremely touched and proud I choose his name for our son, my son is now a teen and LOVES his name because he shares it with people that he loves. I couldn't imagine him with any other name now. So it it was me I would go with Caleb Clement.

Welcome to mamapedia.

You need to find out what names YOU are comfortable with. Start by shouting them in the house - because that's what you'll be saying on a playground!

Your husband has a say in this too as the baby is HIS child too.

I like BOTH names. Having family history is important. Both of my boys middle names are are their grandfathers.

The question is WHAT DO YOU THINK about the names? Which one do YOU like better?

I think Clement is really cool. I love older names. No one really ever uses middle names, so I would not worry about the flow.

I prefer the Caleb Matthew. Caleb Colton is a bit flat in my opinion. Though it may work depending on the last name. You could choose Colton just because it's a family name. You could also give him 2 middle names to liven it up. My grandson has 2 middle names Chase Melvin I can't remember the second one because we rarely use it. It's the name of an early artist. Melvin is his great grandfather's name. His mother chose the second the second middle name because she'd liked the name from when she was in high school.

So you could name him Colton Mathew Clement. That breaks up the c's.
