Valentine Disaster - Any Good Stories to Top This One?

Ugh what a nightmare! So sorry you had to learn the hard way to never, ever, rely on those handles. Whenever my husband or kids carries anything in my cake or cupcake carriers you hear me yelling after them "support the bottom, support the bottom! Never use the handle, support the bottom!"

Honestly I wish they would just remove the handles from the tops of these carriers so that people don't have this happen to them. Such a bummer to see all of that hard work go to waste!

Same thing happened to me at the end of soccer season. Tried a new recipe with cute little soccer balls on top with green "grass" sprinkles. Kids finish game, I grab the cupcake carrier, top pops off, cupcakes in the grass. I.WANTED.TO.DIE! Funny thing is in my situation, these kids didn't care that they had touched grass, they picked them up and ate them.

It happens to the best of us when we have tried so h*** o* something!

Oh no! I thought you were going to say you got to school only to find out they only accept store bought treats...but this is MUCH worse. I am so sorry for you and your son!!

The first year hubby and I went out to dinner for V-Day (had been dating for 6 months), we were leaving a Chinese restaurant and he offered to carry me on his back to the car (not sure why...it seemed fun and romantic at the same time). I jumped a bit TOO HIGH on his back and he proceeded to take a few steps forward and tumbled down onto his hands, never falling but I went OVER his head and his head came up UNDER my skirt!! This was all on rocks....and we were dying laughing!! Then we find out that there was a couple sitting in their truck and this happened RIGHT in front of them! They got out laughing so hard but trying not to in order to make sure we were okay. Hope this TRUE story lightened your day!

Well...it's not a Valentine story, but I made a Chocolate Walnut Pecan pie for Thanksgiving (hand-shelled walnuts, Ghiradelli chocolate, Bourbon, the works) that came out beautifully and my 140 lb. dog leaped into the car as I was loading stuff and stepped RIGHT in the middle of it. I almost killed him on the spot.
Later in the day, after I was feeling like I wouldn't burst out crying at well-intentioned jokes about it, my cousin (that hosted the meal) told me that 'Dog Paw Pie' is a much better name for it and I should make it every year.

Aww! They're adorable, may they rest in pieces.

That's when you keep the pictures to prove you're an awesome mom and then rush to the nearest grocery for store bought cupcakes. Being the homemade everything mom, you'll feel bad about this, but the children will love them just the same. Sorry for the bad morning! I don't have anything to top your story because tomorrow will be my son's first valentine school party, and I'm just bringing supplies (plates/napkins/cups).

while your son would likely have forgetten that 'one valentine's' that he brought cupcakes, he will definitely remember the valentines where the cupcakes spilled **that he and mom worked all night on***.

He'll remember that for the rest of his life, simply because it didn't go as planned. And he'll always remember his mom - because it was truly the thought that counted. :)

I'm so sorry. They look wonderful. I doubt anyone can top this story. At least I hope not.

As for my Valentine's history, I always think of the one when I was a young wife and mom, working full time, and going out to dinner (a real splurge that year) at a special place. I fell asleep at the table in-between the salad course and the pasta!!!!! Now I can laugh. :)

OMG! Those are (were) the cutest cupcakes I've seen in a long time! SOOO sorry they ended up on the ground. But I can sense from your post that (as awful as it was) you have a sense of humor about the whole thing. Everyone has their share of this kind of stuff. Luckily, you seem to be the kind of person who briefly laments, gets over it and makes another batch for next year's party (which will be even better than this year's). Your son has a talented mama.

This reminds me of the time I made homemade cupcakes for my stepdaughter's birthday. I decided to bring along homemade cupcakes which never looked even half as good as yours by the way. I don't think they even aspired to such greatness but I did try very hard for them to look nice. I digress, though. Somehow *cough, cough - my husband did not turn on the AC in the car like I asked* the cupcakes got too warm and the icing melted off every single cupcake. It was a terrible mess which could not possibly be salvaged. I stopped by the donut store on the way to the party and we did donuts instead. My stepdaughter complained the entire party how much she wanted a homemade cake. Sigh. No good deed goes unpunished.

I once re-baked a cake.
I had baked it the day before, we ate some, then I put it in the oven for safe keeping overnight.
Came home the next night, swung through the kitchen, turned on the oven to pre-heat. A few minutes later my son asked me why the house smelled like burned marshmallows.

Yup, the cake was in the oven. Nice and melted, with frosting scorching on the bottom of the oven.

The was about 8 years ago and he still teases me about it.
Rotten teen :)

Oh, and there was time I caught the toaster oven on fire.
Then the time I blew up a glass baking dish on the stove top.
Yet, I still cook several times a week.

I sat on my aunt's birthday cake one year....I was about five and still haven't forgotten.

Cat tried to eat the turkey one Thanksgiving....Dog got the roast one Christmas....

Yeah, I have had a lot of those moments.

Wow. Just. Wow. Thank goodness you took a picture! They were beautiful. Being quite baking challenged (I just don't do baking math well - ever), I'd say they looked like they came from a fancy bakery. I could just cry for you.

Oh my goodness your post brought a giggle, literally.

I'm so sorry that happened, but I promise this will be something you laugh about with your teenage son 10-12 years from now.

I can't tell you how many "fiasco" moments my sons ask me to re-live and re-tell, over and over! They are 18 & 15 and it goes fast.

D., you have my admiration for your gorgeous work. I hope you feel proud of the results, even though they didn't make it to their intended destination. And I almost want to cry for you over the disaster.

The silver lining: you'll probably be able to laugh over this in a year or two, and you'll have a story to tell your grandkids about The Cupcake Disaster of 2013.

Even if it isn't visible to us from our individual perspective, I really believe that when we do things lovingly and carefully, all of creation benefits from it in some way.

I believe this because I've had dreams and visions showing me beyond doubt that everything is connected. Knowing this helps me hold onto the love when I have challenging things happen. I wish you the best – you deserve it!

My worst Valentine's Day was still the one when DH and I were dating. I was all dressed up, ready to go to dinner and he called to tell me his ex had dropped off the kids with raging cases of lice and dinner would have to be post-poned.

Sorry about the cupcakes. I know it stinks when you work so hard and that happens. They were very cute.

OK - SUPER CUTE!! I am crying inside for both of you.
Not really disaster, but one of those "geesh" moments.
I had started a new job and told all the girls in my office (all girls, btw) that my hubby and I didn't really celebrate V-day. Then an hour after that, he walks in with a huge bunch of stargazer lillies (sigh - love them) and looks like this knight in shining armor (he kinda is) and I look like a mean old stingy hag (I kinda am - lol) that hates valentine's day.
Oh well, I loved them and they made our entire area smell incredible for days. NOTE: this has not happened since - hee hee.

Well, the cupcakes were adorable :) Maybe after all that, you're going to have nothing but good karma tomorrow.

My son knocked the carrier off the table after I had just finished decorating the cupcakes for his birthday party. Luckily the lid didn't come off, but the frosting was all messed up. I was able to scrape the frosting off, smear it back on and cover up the whole mess with sprinkles. At least they still tasted good.

Those cupcakes were so cute!

It's not a Valentine's Day story, but when my son was turning two, I made him a cake the night before. I had the bright idea to take two mini loaf pans and also make two smaller cakes to send with him to his sitter and her kids/daycare kids for a treat. Baked the cakes, put the small ones on a plate, decorated them, put saran wrap over it, and promptly tripped over my own feet and dropped them on the floor. They landed sideways and the plate broke into a bunch of pieces. I just stood there for a minute staring at it before I could even move to clean it up. At least the main cake was still ok.

I think it was an omen though. I had a horrible day at work the next day, ended up leaving work early extremely upset over a meeting with my boss's boss, and basically spent the weekend trying to calm down before I went back to work on Monday. Luckily my son was too young to realize that most of his birthday plans got scrapped. Thankfully all of my other birthday cakes have turned out ok. But if one falls on the floor, I'm calling in sick to work the next day!

Well, at least you have an adorable picture of what could have been!!! Those are sooo cute! Maybe next time?
