I am lookoing for a new vacuum, but don't want to spend a foturne, does anyone have one they love or hate and why? I have mostly hardwood with area rugs.
I recently bought the Bissel Momentum and I love it.
It sells for around $130. But I bought it at Kohls when it was on sale and had a coupon.
Great deal. Best "cheap" vaccum I've owned so far (and I've had many!)

We used to have a hoover windtunnel that we loved. I've never vacuumed hardwood, though, except with our little dustbuster vacuum.
Dyson. Great suction and never again will you have to buy or change a vacuum bag. It is amazing.
I love my Dyson for my hardwood floors. target has good sales, someties with a $50 gift card with purchase.
I have a hoover windtunnel. Hate it because it levels two inch lines in the carpet. I don't think Hoover is what they used to be. Read about it before you buy it. For my hardwoods I have a central vac., & love using the hose. So, I wouldn't get an up right for Hardwoods.
I have a Riccar that I love. It was comparable in price with an Oreck that we tested at home. I liked the Riccar better. I have tile floors everywhere except the bedrooms (carpet in those), and area rugs in each of the big rooms (under dining table, breakfast table, and in both family and living rooms). It is GREAT with the rugs and gets all the dog hairs out of both rugs and the bedroom carpeting. We've had it a few years now, and it works as wonderfully as it did the day we brought it home. It has bags (which I like--- I had a bagless before and HATED it), and it is an upright vacuum that weighs about 8 lbs-- just like Oreck.
Mine cost $400. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
I have an Oreck that I love, love love but I spent upwards of $700 for it. 10 yr warranty, yearly cleaning, etc.
I had a Hoover that was reasonable, less than $200 and it is still going strong. It is over 14 yrs old.
I would never put the Hoover on my hardwoods but I do use the Oreck on them.
My old Hoover Elite is the best vaccum I've had next to the old Hoover canister. My Hoover canister lasted forever, but I had to get rid of it since I couldn't get bags for it any more and the hinges rusted out after 20 yrs. of service. I still have the Elite, but you can't buy it any more since it's 19 yrs. old, but I have it bolted together because the plastic cover broke. I have to unbolt it every time I want to change the bag. I had a canister Electrolux, that only lasted 3 yrs. because the motor burned out. I got a Hoover Widepath 2 Christmas ago and want to throw it out! Yes, you heard me right. I no longer love Hoover. That is the worst vaccum ever invented. The only good thing about it is that it has a super long cord. The hose is super short, so you can't reach anything. The vent goes around the entire vaccum, so you wind up chasing the cat hair across the floor. (Yes, I have hard wood floors.) It's aweful. I want to try a canister Kenmore. I don't know how they are, but they are inexpensive and canisters are great for reaching those dust bunny hiding spots.
If your rugs are low-pile, you could probably get a reasonable shop vac. They are inexpensive and we had one for our first couple of apartments. They are not great for pulling dirt and dander out of deeper carpeting, but were fine for hard floors and rugs. Personally, I hate replacing bags, and that would be the main drawback for me. They have attachments for furniture, hard floors, corners, and are pretty lightweight and compact. The one we have has a retractable cord, so it stored right inside.
Now I have a Dirt Devil Express Vac, which I love except for the fact that it does not have a hose, so corners and along baseboards are a pain. I also do not like using it on hard floors, even though it says it can be used for them, but I only have a small kitchen to sweep. We use the shop vac in the garage now for when I get around to cleaning the cars out.
Dyson hands down. My hubby was skeptical about spending that much for a vacuum but would do it all over again without even thinking about it. Worth every penny, never knew I could LOVE an appliance so much! We have hardwood and area rugs as well, it has a button to push for area rugs so the vacuum won't eat them. It is amazing what this thing picks-up, will make you sick after your first use--you won't believe what your floors/carpets have been hiding. Not to mention super easy to clean & no costly bags or filters required. Only downside is the weight of their larger models, we went with the lightweight model and it keeps up with a 3000sq ft house with no issues and very easy to maneuver. Best deal we have found it the 20% mailer coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond. Not to mention they have great customer should you not be as happy as we are with the product after using it.
