I am 41 and have had a 28 day cycle with little variation for over 25 years. This week I began bleeding on day 16. My OB says this occurs in come women once a year. She did not think it was a miscarriage nor early onset of ovulation. Please share if this has occured with you and how it resolved.

What can I do next?

I was also going to suggest that if bleeding continues to be unusual you check for any fibroids or polyps. These are not uncommmon.

It is good that you talked to your OB first. I was extremely regular, every 28 days, until I was 39 (last year). Now it could be 35 days, 18 days, or even good old 28. In my case I assumed it is due to age and/or perimenopause, but now I think I should double check. It does make you want to hurry up if you want more kids! Good luck.

Hi DB

I had a similar experience with abnormal bleeding. I have also been a 28 day cycle person with regularity. When I was about 35 I started having abnormal bleeding. I would get my period more lightly than usual, it would seem to stop for about a week then I would start bleeding again mid cycle. I went from having a 7 day period to 2 3 -4 day periods. My OB checked for endometriosis and ruled it out and suggested that I go on birth control. Since I was going to get pregnant I opted to just put up with it. Anyway, I never got it resolved until after my daughter was born and I needed an abdominal ultrasound due to pain. That was when they discovered that I had a large polyp in my uterus. I guess the polyp was out of sync with the rest of my uterus thus causing me to bleed separately for the polyp. Anyway, it was easily resolved with a DNC and now my periods are back to normal.

If the abnormal bleeding continues for a few months I would suggest getting an ultrasound to see if maybe something is interfering with your cycle. A friend of mine (same age as me) also had the same issue and had a DNC and is fine now.

Your OB has probably seen this before. It is amazing over all those years that something is different.Lucky you that you were so predictable. I don't think there really is anything to worry about. Have you had anything else in your life happen lately? Some stress or surprise? Sometime that will change your cycle or even extra heavy exercising...so I've heard.
