Spotting at 5Wks and Again at 11Wks

Ok, does anyone know what the deal is with spotting in the first trimester? This is my 4th child and I have never spotted with any other ones. No pain, my Dr says the baby looks fine. This isnt from intercourse or an exam. Just spontanious. Started at 5 wks, I assumed it was the implantation bleeding, went away after a few days. Now its back. I know I'm not misscarrying. My only question is what other than the above that didnt cause it could possibly cause this? Stress maybe? I have had an ultrasound at 8wks and there is only one baby and the Dr says everything looks good and the baby has a super strong heartbeat! I think the placenta was barely forming at that point, as there was still a little yolk sac left.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So a few days later and it seems to have subsided again. I hope that is the last time it shows up in this pregnancy. Thanks to all who responded. I feel alot better knowing I'm not abnormal!!

Oh I was thinking tonight just about that very thing - spotting -something in a movie brought back a memory of my second pregnancy and the spotting I had with it. That was ten years ago and I do remember that it happened in the first trimester and the doctor did an extra ultrasound and some blood tests with me-she told me from the blood test they can tell if the baby is still growing. I'm suprised that the had not done that? anyway yes rest is what they recommended to me but at that stage I had a 8 month old baby - pretty hard! somehow I managed it all and have two boys now 13 months apart. keep calm and positive - hugs

Hi Lunnsie, I did that with two of my pregnancies and 1 was just excess buildup that had to pass and the other was placenta privia.

I spotted occasionally throughout my entire pregnancy, starting at about ten weeks, then a few other times until about 20 weeks. My doc did ultrasounds and everything looked fine. He eventually took me off exercise all together and then I was finally put on bed rest at about 23 weeks. These were only small spottings. I did several ultrasounds and the baby, placenta and uterus all looked perferctly normal.

I ended up delivering at 26 weeks, however for what seems to be completely unrelated issues. I don't think you should be worried. I don't mean to do that to you. But I would monitor the spotting, letting your doctor know everytime and how often it happens. I would also try to limit exerting yourself physically (heavy lifting, too much exercise/physical activity) and staying in tune with your body. This was my first prengancy and I really wasn't sure what was normal and what wasn't, but this being your fourth, you should be able to have a better feel for it. I really hope this helps and best of luck!

Hi Lynnise,
With both of my kids I had spotting. Both started around 5-6 weeks (had a little craping also)and then it stoped and then I had more off and one the first trimester. The doctor told me to rest as much as possible and drink a lot of fluids. She told me that I could have been over doing it or that I could have had some stess issues. Keep in touch with your doctor and if there is any craping or if the bleeding gets heavier let them know. But as long as the baby and you are fine, than you probably just need some rest.
Take Care and Best Wishes

could be placenta previa. it was for me. i feel foolish saying this to you with 3 kids and 3 businesses, but try to rest. when i was laying down, my spotting decreased a lot. i was told as the uterus grows, it would resolve, and it did, at about 16 weeks. i now have a perfect 2 month old.
best wishes.

Hey there, I spotted with my 2nd thru the 1st trimester and into the 2nd, this after a miscarriage 3 months prior. So you know I was freaking out. It turned out to be a harmless polyp on my cervix. It was the sole source of spotting and they left it alone as to not traumatize my cervix while carrying. Docs said if it was still there after delivery, they would simply twist it and pinch it off. It disappeared after delivery. For me it wasn't anything to worry about. Except that they didn't determine what it was till the 2nd trimester so I spent that whole beginning of my pregnancy freaking out! Good Luck.

I had spotting in the 1st trimester with my second pregnancy and each time I went to the doctor they said everything was fine. After getting to the 14wk mark, and still spotting about once a week or so, I insisted on another ultrasound. The docs found I had a small placental tear. Stress, bending down, picking up my kids was all contributing. Over the next few months I was monitored more closely and by the eight month it had gone away. Not telling you this to scare you but just wanted to share my experience. Good luck with #4!!!

Hi L., I spotted with my second one for a short while around week 8. In my case it was placenta previa, the placenta was attached too close to the cervix. As the baby grew, the attachment of the placenta moved and it was no longer an issue for me. But my doctor advised me to take it very easy while the spotting was going on, basically bed rest. And then just to try to take it easy the rest of the pregnancy. I'm not sure what else could cause spotting, but this is one cause.

Good luck!

Slow down.... Maybe you should look into getting some help with the other 3 children. This is your bodies way of telling you to take a break.

I did spot a few times while I was pregnant with my first pregnancy... With many doctor visits and US, they said the baby was fine. Went to my 17 week US and come to find out we were pregnant with twins. Went on to have two healthy babies and I did stop spotting.

As long as you continue seeing a heart beat and you are still feeling pregnancy symptoms.. fatigue, sore breast, etc. just take a sign from your body to slow down. Eat healthy and drink lots of fluid.
Good luck T

I started bleeding at 7 weeks and was sure I was miscarrying and went to the dr. for an ultrasound and all was fine. They told me a blood vessel in my uterus ruptured. I continued to bleed on and off until 13 weeks. It was very worrisome, but my dr. assured me all was ok and just told me to take it as easy as possible. I have another friend who was pregnant at the same time who also had spotting that sounds similar to yours and all was fine with her. Not sure of your age, but we were both over 35 at the time and not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Vitamin E can really help to improve adherence of the placenta, you can take lots. Be sure to stop taking it by 28 weeks so you have no placenta retention problems at the birth. Please also consider that this may be a way your body is asking you to slow down some, I am an overachiever too and had some spotting in my second pregnancy that subsided when I got more rest. Good luck!

I spotted my first trimester. Doctor checked me regularly and I had a normal little boy. My next pregnancy was twins. A doctor suggested to me that the possibility that my first delivery should have been twins, but one of them did not develop,( .i.e. the spotting. )was likely. Check with your doctor regularly and keep off your feet as much as you can. After three babies, your girly parts are not as strong as they used to be. Good Luck

This happened with me with both of my pregnancy's. Only mine went from spotting to full on hemmoraging. The first was due to placenta previa and the other I have no idea. Both babies were perfectly fine. My Mom had the same thing when she was pregnant with me...in fact she didn't know she was pregnant with me for the first three months because she had regular periods. When I would have spotting my doctor would just have me lay down and put my feet up with no strenuous activity or intercourse for a couple days. Hope this helps...I know it is so stressful when you see that spotting. Both my pregnancy's were emotional rollercoasters because of this.

Have you had an ultrasound yet? Ask your doc to see where the placenta is.
Placenta previa can cause bleeding- it is when the placenta is at the bottom of the uterus covering the cervix. I had that with my second pregnancy and had bleeding. although I think it started a bit later.

Hi there,
I spotted, or should I say gushed, with my second pregnancy. I had an ultrasound to determine if I miscarried, and there were two babies! Are you extra sick, hormonal? I had no idea I was carrying twins until I saw and heard for myself. I think I was about 10 weeks when the second gush happened.
Just a thought...

I had the same problem but mine actually went on consistently for 4 weeks, every week around the same time I was spotting. I was in my OB's office getting Ultrasounds to make sure the baby was ok once a week as well. I worked out probably harder than I should and I was really stressed out. I didn't listen to my body when it said rest becuase I wasn't feeling well either. I figured sickness was just part of the pregnancy and to avoid gaining weight i still tried kickboxing (no contact) and running....getting too hot and exhausted I believe contributed. Once I settled my nerves (mostly the factor) and took it a bit easier on my workouts I have been fine since week 13. I have a couple of friends that reminded me they spotted their whole pregnancy here and there as well. I hope this brings you comfort. Good luck with the pregnancy.

Hi L.,

I also spotted a lot in my first trimester, and everytime I went into my OB and everytime baby was fine. Then, at around 12 weeks, I started bleeding like I was having a period. He did an ultrasound and discovered I had a marginal placenta previa (placenta lying low near the cervix). The baby was totally fine and oblivious! He told me no exercise for the rest of my pregnancy - no bedrest, just take it easy. I had gone to stretch class at the gym a couple days before bleeding started. After that, I had no more bleeding and went on to have a beautiful baby boy!
Good Luck!

I'm pregnant with my 3rd child right now and have experienced the exact same thing. At 4 weeks I started spotting very dark and it lasted for 2 weeks. I went in for an early ultrasound and everything was fine and the spotting went away. Then at 11 weeks I started bleeding red and passed several clots. I thought for sure I was miscarrying but there was no pain. I went in the next day for another ultrasound and they found a heartbeat and said that I should just stay positive and hope for the best. However, they had a lot of trouble finding the baby on their machine, so my OB wanted me to have a better ultrasound and go get my first screen done. I went to see Dr Traynor at the John Muir Perinatal Medical Group and he found that I had a little "pocket" of blood at the top of my uterous. He explained as the baby grew it would continue to push that extra blood out and once it was large enough to completely fill up my uterous (probably around 14 weeks) the spotting should stop.
