How old when you switch from non-floride to floride paste? My 2 yr old has enbraced brushing but likes to eat/suck on paste and I would like to introduce regular paste so it is not as sweet..thoughts?

What can I do next?

Personally, I don't use Fluoride laden toothpaste as I think it's pretty bad for you. Nor do I allow my child to do as such. Instead, we use non-fluoride toothpaste such as Dr. Mercola's.. Now, I know Dentists may disagree with me, but I just don't think all that fluoride is good for you, including what they use in the drinking water at times..

There are many alternatives to traditional toothpaste out there, esp ones that aren't artificially sweetened and or have Fluoride..

Whatever you decide, best of luck

We had my son on a vitamin that included flouride about a year ago he's 2 1/2 now, and they were turning his teeth black ironically....gross. So I stopped giving him that, and was brushing his teeth with the non-flouride paste. Anyway he was a disaster when it came to teeth brushing - acted like we were ending his life. So the point is that I was worried about his teeth b/c of bad brushing and no floride either.
At his 2 yr. visit the pediatrician recommended that I get a flouride toothpaste and just use "a rice-grain ammount" on his brush. So I have the strawberry Tom's of Maine and just use that tiny bit. He likes it and it has helped to clear up his teeth a bit. Such a small amount isn't going to hurt him if he swallows a bit and I feel like it helps his teeth. Good luck!

I waited until they were old enough to understand how to spit the toothpaste out. I guess it was around 2 years old, maybe a little bit older (2.5?). You might like to try Tom's of Maine's kids' toothpaste. It has a pleasant taste, but it isn't sweet like a lot of kids' toothpastes. My kids weren't too interested in eating it, like they were with the pastes that tasted like bubblegum or whatever.

Tom's of Maine has a non-floride minty toothpaste that we use with my daughter so that she isn't too used to the sweet stuff but we don't have to worry about her swallowing the floride.

My now 3 yr 4mo old boy JUST NOW switched to "big boy" toothpaste. He'd been using the baby toothpaste up until now b/c he would do the same as your son. I just mentioned how whenever he starts spitting, we can switch to the big boy toothpaste like Buzz or Woody or Spiderman ...... We spent about a week or so of him spitting only before I bought the big boy stuff.

So if I were you, don't rush it. He'll be ready when he's ready. I haven't tasted either toothpaste, but I don't think the Spiderman AIM toothpaste is any less sweet. It smells sweet and tooty-fruity just like the baby stuff.
