Craigslist is blacked out today & I think wikipedia did the other day.
I don't know a lot about this bill, but is there a chance it could pass & totally change the internet?

What can I do next?

It's not going to change overnight but it's a huge threat to a open, free internet. It gives corporations the right to demand that wesites be shut down for what they claim is piracy without any due process or judicial ruling. Very scary in that again we are handing over more power to private companies to control our lives.
The internet is a great "leveler" it allows a single person without much money to connect, share ideas, profit and educate millions of people worldwide. That's threatening to anyone in power. Look at the uprisings going on in the Middle East. The Arab Spring would not have been possible without a open, free world wide web.
I compare it to the recently passed dention bill (NDAA). It gives way too much power to a very small group of people. Basically more poswer to the government and the 1% who make the rules. AS long as you agree with who call s the shots it's fine. the minute you don't we are creeping ever closer to facisim.
I find it all pretty scary.

This bill and a few other bills are the ''changes'' coming to America....Scary.

Look into SOPA, PIPA and NDAA....These three Bills change the way we as a nation have always been allowed to be.

It is time to WAKE UP and realize they are about to start a hostile take over of the American Dream....not trying to sound like a gloomy doomy..It is just us finally realizing we were had...

I totally agree this country needs a few more gov't regulations (gasp and I'm a registered Republican) but it just seems so ominous...should the gov't find 1 oz of pirated material, the whole sight will be shut down? Can't the sites just pay a fine, remove the material and let the good millionaires of wikipedia, yahoo, facebook and even mamapedia and the like, get on with their corporate taxed lives?

I'm not worried. In this day and age and all the digitalrats being raised in front of any type of screen in our society as we speak, someone is bound to come up w/an alternative site should any given site be shut down. That and I'm one of the most digitially needyless person I know. Should my internet be shut down and I can't access things like mamapedia, I'll live. Unlike some, I can actually remember a time I wasn't ever plugged in accept my cell phone.

Maybe w/o internet, people will actually learn to relate to each other in person again.

Yes it is a very serious issue that government a ridiculous amount of power. Its a huge step closer to Communism. SOPA and PIPA will make it so that the government can censor the internet. Yes at first thought, as a parent, you think oh thats not too bad, then I wont have to worry as much for my children seeing things online that they shouldnt. But its not like that at all. They can sensor what information you can see and not see, like what is happening in the middle east. If the Govt can censor what you read online about it, there wont be very much information released, ill tell you that. Then you have to wonder what kinds of things they are trying to hide from the population and in an ignorance is bliss sort of situation, its really not. Can you imagine modern day America WITHOUT Google, Craiglist, Facebook, Yahoo, online news sources, and even, gasp, MAMAPEDIA! and all sorts of stuff. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take a stand, talk about tell all your friends and family, educate yourselves and show Congress they can't control every aspect of our lives!
