Sore on Corner of Mouth Due to Pacifier?

my 16 month old woke up with a sore on the outside of his mouth - I'm assuming this may be due to pacifier use during the night? Anyone have any experience with this happening and if so, any suggestions on treatment (he won't sleep without it)?

What can I do next?

This happened to my daughter and that is when I decided to get rid of the pacifier. She only used it at nap and bedtime. So I clipped the end of the pacifier and she never wanted it again. The sore went away very quickly after that. If you are still going to use it, I would sterilze it and just limit the time your child has it.

This happened with my son around 7 months except he had a huge red ring around his mouth from the outside of the pacifier. It got kind of bad so we asked the dr and she perscribed a steroid foam solution and it cleared it up pretty quickly. Try asking your ped about it. Also just some extra advice, maybe think about taking the pacifier away. I know it can be a struggle bc of the age but it will only get harder if you wait. I took my son off at 11 months and with in 2 days he had forgot about it. About two weeks later he was playing with a baby that had one and never even tried to put it in his mouth. My neice was on one until she was 3 and her parents had a horrible time trying to break the habit. The older they are the more verbal they can be about wanting it. With younger kids they don't even realize they are missing it, your 16 month old is right in the middle so I would try to break the habit as soon as you can. My neice would actually dig thru the trash to find ones that had been thrown away bc she was old enough to know that the trash is where they would go when she wasn't suppossed to have them! Good Luck!

Hi E.. We experience this literally all the time! Please don't worry as it goes away quickly.

Some things we do to lessen the occurence or its severity:

1. i sterilize the pacifiers with mineral water twice! to ensure I got any residue off from #2.

2. I use aquaphor around his mouth at nite, after I dry him from the bath.

3. I ensure in the summer that he is not hot at nite and thus not sweating in his sleep (a/c)

4. use some sunbloc in the day on the sore so it does not get more irritated.

Only allow him to have it when he is in bed, or in the car. Do this for a while. My son started chewing on his and when he needed at new on at daycare, we provided one but they told him Meme all gone. We continued it at night and now he is off of it. It sometimes is a rough few nights, but then they do not look for it any longer. While he still calls for it once in a while, he does not need it.

My son also had a rash all the way around his mouth from the heat and the paci. I could not wait to get rid of it. I have to say daycare gave us the break we needed from it. you can also. His rash would go away when he no longer had it in his mouth.

Good luck
