So...How Do You Feel About Ham?

Seriously, that's the question.

Sort of a Ham Survey, ok?

Is it like Dreamy Salty Goodness to you, or like Death With A Slice of Pineapple on top?

I'll cast the first vote, of course. I'd consider trading one of my children for a decent ham, if need be.

Teehee!

Thanks Ladies!

So What Happened?

Coming off the Holidays, I can never do ham for Christmas dinner, everyone who comes to my house is totally Hammed Out. So perhaps I'm a little bitter?

mmmmmmm ham.

I think the pig is a magical wonderful animal.

My favorite Simpson's episode is where Lisa and Homer are talking about Lisa becoming a vegetarian.....

“(Lisa) "I'm going to become a vegetarian"

(Homer) "Does that mean you're not going to eat any pork?"

"Yes"

"Bacon?"

"Yes Dad"

"Ham?"

"Dad all those meats come from the same animal"

"Right Lisa, like there's some wonderful, magical animal!"”

I like ham. I like turkey and beef and lamb and rabbit and chicken.

If your ham is too dry when you finish cooking it its because the internal temp got too hot. I like smoking my hams or any of the other meats mentioned above.

I don't like having ham for Christmas. Christ was a Jew and Jews can't have pork. Kind of ironic isn't it, to celebrate the birth of the King of the Jews and do it with ham.

BTW, Do you know why Arkansas celebrates Thanksgiving with ham instead of turkey? Its because they sent all their turkeys to Washington DC. . . ;~))

Good luck to you and yours.

Great with white beans and rice, or in potato soup, or buy itself, or cooked with sweet potatoes (or homemade mac 'n cheese if hubby isn't home) and spinach madeline. Awesome sandwiches with a lovely slice of fresh tomato and some spinach leaves. YUM. It's my friend. ;)

Hi theresa-

I LOVE ham...my father's FAV dinner was ham...mac and cheese...and baked beans! I make that often...as a dedication to my dad...

BUT what I really love about ham are the leftovers...pea soup is a regular favorite around here...and ya GOT to have the bone...and some meat on it for that...

Sammies as leftovers too cannot be beat...some crusty bread...some cheese...YUM!

Just saw some 'semi boneless' hams on sale...making room in my freezer as I type!

Best Luck!

So FUNNY how many answers you got to this dumb question! LOL!
Growing up, I hated ham for Christmas dinners, it was my grandparents tradition and I was like barf! These days, I love it on certain occasions. I will fry some sliced black forest ham and eat it with an egg or once a year, I have an uncle who sends us a ham from some pricey company. It is absolutely delicious. But not something I want alot of. I break up the leftovers into sandwich bags and freeze them and take them out for different things.

I like ham in a variety of ways, but the best (tastes like a fantastic BBQ ham) to me is to get a ham -usually 16-20lbs and have them skin it. Put it in a roasting pan on a rack and fill with water up to right underneath the ham. This IS a raw, uncooked, uncured, skinned ham! Put it in your oven the night before you want to eat it at 250 around 8 pm. At midnight before bed, turn it to 300. When you get up, up it to 350 and cook until it's done with a meat thermometer -usually about noon for the weight I suggested. It's DELICIOUS! People will beg for more! Slice it and eat it, put BBQ sauce on it -you can't go wrong! Mind you -it's not the "ham" you're used to (as in Honeybaked or cured types of hams), but it's divine!

I'm so sorry that I didn't know earlier, you could have come to Christmas here. I alternate what I make on Christmas - turkey, roast beef, ham, leg of lamb. We had the ham this year. My 12 year old doesn't care for it but I did homemade mac and cheese as a side dish, so he was able to make a main course out of it. I do like ham very much but out of my four alternating holiday meats, I can't say it's my favorite one.

I was never a big fan of ham when I was a kid, but I am now. My family's nothing but picky eaters, including the dog, so they don't count. Back to why I'm a ham fan. I had my first bout with high cholesterol when I turned 40, got scared, and started looking stuff up since I don't want to be on meds. Guess what I discovered? Ham is the only meat that is low-fat! It's just as low-fat as chicken breasts. So how do I like my ham? In sandwiches, pan seared with sweet N' sour sauce, baked in pie crust, cooked in with my string beans with onions, used as a substitute for corned beef in corned beef and cabbage, and of course....us Germans put it in our potato salad.....ok, it's usually bacon in the potato salad; but I've been substituting ham since it's low-fat.

I love ham, especially since I began to roast them on a rack over water to warm them up.
They come out very juicy and the steaming seems to cut back on the saltiness a bit.
Before I learned to do it this way, ham came out very dry and I didn't care for it much.
Now I'm more than happy to do a ham more than once a year at Easter (we did one for Christmas instead of turkey or goose this year), and the bones help make great soups.

First of all, you are MADE OF AWESOME for even posting this question.

Secondly, ham is made of awesome. Some hams, anyway. Nitrites and whatnot sadly give me headaches, but I seem to do all right with the higher-end hams.

Third, I love watching the expression of horror on people's faces when I eat pork. "But you're JEWISH!" they say. hehehe. Not every Jew keeps Kosher, bub.

Fourth, it is physically impossible to say the word "ham" and not smile afterward, even a little. Go ahead, I dare you to say "ham" and keep a straight face. See? I told you!
