My nephew lives in California. I am in Texas. Sure I could get him a t-shirt or something, but I'd first like to see if you ladies have any wonderful ideas out there for what to get him for his 1st bday (Dec) and Christmas. Remember Denise's post a week or two ago about buying a gift to a local outing/restaurant to support those smaller businesses? What near Riverside, CA or Yorba Linda, CA is affordable yet good gift for a one-yr-old? Please let me know what toy, too, your 1 yr old loves. I can't for the life of me remember what my son liked at 1yr. I'd love to mail them a box of presents (bday and xmas) here in the next week, but not spend all my money on shipping, so a small but favorite gift idea would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ladies!

Tons of online places have free shipping now. You could order something and have it delivered right to his home instead of yours.??

How about a cute book? Fairly easy and inexpensive to ship. There are lots of cute baby/toddler books out there. Or you could get him a more timeless special classic, like The Velveteen Rabbit or something.

I don't know if you still have time, but I love the I See Me (http://www.iseeme.com/) books. It is a company that will personalize books for a specific child. Very cool! I have given these and received them for gifts and they are great keepsakes. I'm sure there are other companies that do this too...

My daughter got the Leapfrog Fridge Farm and Fridge Phonics for her 1st birthday. She loved it and *still* likes to play with it.

What about play food? I'm trying to remember if IKEA's food is OK for the little guys or not.

Or send him books.

OMG I have my first nephew's first birthday coming up in Dec as well... and I have 3 neices. So last year, I decided on what I'm getting the girls, and told my brother to go pick it up from Toys R Us (I had already paid, and he jsut had to go pick it up.). But this year, I may just look for a site that has free S&H. Although I have been considering getting personalized books for all 4 of them (its 12.99ea from some website I got coupon in the mail for)

Not sure on the restaurant part of the question. But for your nephew -

fat crayons and a coloring book
tickets to the zoo
a tote bag with a wallet, sunglasses, toy cell phone
a soft shapes velcro toy (ex, a Noah's ark with soft figures that attach to the ark)
