We have just gone through our 3rd can opener in 2 years. The first 2 were manual which we don't mind, and the 3rd one was electric and didn't last through ONE CAN!!! My husband and I are so annoyed with can openers lol Can anybody recommend a dependable can opener?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So we purchased the Oxo Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener, and OMG!!! Every time we use it we always make a positive comment about it. It does take a second to get use to how it works. It's not your typical can opener, but it was well worth the money. It cost us $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond. Oh and it's manual too. Not a possible way to get cut by the can or the top cut off. We absolutely LOVE it! Thank you ladies for all of the responses, you are the BEST!!!

I can't personally address the OXO can opener but can attest to the OXO 100% satisfaction guarantee. They have replaced several products for me without any question or problem: apple divider/cutter (plastic cracked after heavy use), ice cream scoop (finish discolored), garlic press (finish chipped).

I contacted the company, filled out a form and mailed the old one in. In each and every case, they sent a brand new replacement within
a few weeks.

I will be forever dedicated to the OXO brand due to their excellent customer service and guarantee!

Although for a can opener, I personally prefer an under cabinet mount electric can opener.

Pampered Chef. I have both the new and old models. The 'old' model I've had for 12 years with no problems. I only bought the new one so we could have a smooth edge opener too. The 'new' model I've have for over 5 years with no problems.

I have had an OXO stainless steel can opener for quite some time now and like it a lot. Its heavy duty, has been put in the dishwasher and works really good.

I have a manual can opener that had been my GRANDMOTHERS. It's ancient. It looks like I found it off the street, but it WORKS. Maybe try finding one at an antique store, seriously. They just don't make stuff like they used to!! OR get one from Pampered Chef... that stuff has a lifetime guarantee. I'd still stick with a manual, they seem more indestructible :)

update: how much do the OXO ones run? Now I'm interested ;)

I HIGHLY recommend the Pampered Chef Can opener...i don't like electric ones either, and this one isn't hard to use (no straining while cranking) and it leaves a smooth edge on the lid so you don't have a chance to get cut. We have been using it for a long time and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

iam so glad you asked because i need to know too :) we go through 1 can opener every 6 months. it will just slowly become harder and harder to turn and then it will not even latch on to the can, so frustrating!

I have a great one by OXO with the black rubber handles. Got it from Bed, Bath and Beyond and have had it for years. Industrial stength!

I bought a heavy duty one manual from a housewares store twenty years ago (when I was a tot--okay really, for my first apartment) and it is still going fine. I bought it because it was the same kind that we had when I was growing up, and my mom still has, forty years later. It is an Amco Swing-A-Way can opener and you can look for it at a good housewares store or just get it at Amazon.com for under $10. When I bought it, it seemed expensive. I guess it was compared to the $2 ones that were my other options. However, twenty years later and still going, that's a good value. Good luck.

OXO.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. I have never been a fan of the automatic/electric can openers, and I always liked my grandma's old fashioned one. Oxo is dependable, easy, and leaves no sharp edges either. My mom liked mine too, so I gave her one for Xmas a few years ago. She still loves hers, too.

You can probably find it a lot of places (mine came from Bed Bath & Beyond with a 20% off coupon of course), but here is a link to Amazon, just so you can see WHICH Oxo I have:

p.s. after reading some of the other responses, I wanted to add that I used one of the Pampered Chef handheld ones at a friend's house. And I had to try several times on EACH CAN to get it to "hook" so it would work. Maybe I just didn't "know what I was doing"? With the OXO one (which looks similar to the pampered chef one) I had no problems at all. And the handle turns SO easily. You cannot catch your finger on it while turning the knob, either. So ergonomically comfortable!

I have a Hamilton Beach electric can opener I got at Sav-On (now CVS) for less then $15 dollars. I have had it for about 8 years now. We use it practically every day. The cord is stored into the unit and also has a knife sharpener. I have seen HB can openers at CVS. You may want to try it out.

I love my OXO brand hand crank with the black rubber outsides. It's not electric but it's so easy to crank, and then doesn't take up room on the counter. There are also some new ones on the market that are "safety" ones that open the entire lid and don't leave any jagged edges. I haven't tried one before but might if my OXO every goes out (we've had it for 4 years now and it's still like new so I'm not holding my breath!).

I am not a sales rep so this is coming from a strictly consumer point of view. I love my Pampered Chef can opener. I have had it for over 10 years, and it leaves a safe smooth edge so safe for the kids. The only trick is that it takes a little getting used to, and people that aren't used to it will take a few minutes to figure it out.

I aboslutly love the battery operated one touch.... it cuts the sides so there is no sharp edge on the can or lid... and it is battery, so you don't have to worry about the charger, just slip 2 rechargables in it and switch them out qhen they need replacing. Easy as pie! (or pie filling...hehe)
