Should I Go to a New OB/GYN?

Hello,
I just found out that I am pregnant for the second time and I went to a new OB office as my previous OB has left the area. I went in to get a confirmation blood test. I found the nurse to be unfriendly and I thought it was strange that I didn't receive a welcome package with prenatals and a due date or anything. Then I was told to call the office on Monday to get my result. I called in the morning and was told someone would call me back. I called back an hour before they closed as I had not heard back from them and was told again that someone would call, and that my results were there, but nobody called. When I hadn't heard from them by about 11 this morning I called and was told that my results never came in and they might be in this afternoon or tomorrow.

Between the unfriendly nurse and not calling me, and the confusion as to whether my results are in the office, I am strongly considering going to a new OB office. I have actually already found one that seems good, however, I am not sure if I am overacting and should give this office another try...any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone who responded. Okay, from the responses I think I am not overacting. Plus it is now Wednesday and they have yet to have my results! When I was told I would have them Monday. So, I will be going to the new OB GYN I found for my next appointment.

I would definitely go to a new ob, and let this one know why. Pregnancy is stressful enough, as you know, you'll have lots more tests - some of them with potentially scary outcomes, and you certainly don't need to get the runaround on getting your results!

This is an amzing time and no one should take that away form you. Go find another dcotor. I went through the same thing with my first pregnancy, and I wimped out and stayed. They ended up growing on me and I have stuck with them becuase they are familiar with me and my history (and there has been some complications). If I could go back, I would have moved. Find someone you are comfortable, and DO NOT worry about hurting anyones feelings. Good Luck!

Definitely find anohter Doctor! There will be a lot of pre-natal visits and you have to have confidence in your doctor and her staff. It is important that you know you're questions are answered accurately and that your test results aren't mixed up with someone elses, and there is no call for rudeness - that alone would make me switch! but rudeness combined with incompetence - no way! I'm sure you can find an OB/Gyn who has both a civil and competent staff!

Screw them. Jump ship while you're still early in the game. They sound like jerks.

Hi J.,

Sorry about your experience. My advice is to switch sooner rather than later. I had to switch doctors in the MIDDLE of my pregnancy with my first child & found it very hard to get another doctor to accept me as a patient. Two doctors flat out refused me, the one that finally accepted me only took me on as I was friends with one of his other patients.

Good luck,
D.

Hi J.! I think if you are posting the question and feeling unsure, you should probably switch. It is SO important to have a good, positive rapport with your OB and all the nurses during your pregnancy, as you know. You will be seeing them and talking to them a lot over the next few months and you should feel comfortable enough to ask any question, any time. As far as the due date and welcome package, some offices don't give those out until your 8-week appointment. Mine didn't with either of my daughters. You can get a due date from them over the phone, I would imagine. I used babycenter.com both times and their due date was exactly the same as my doctor's. However, that being said, prenatals are important - you should be able to just call whoever your dr. is and get a prescription as soon as you like! It's never too soon for those vitamins.

If you are feeling unsure about switching, you might want to wait until the 8-week appt. and see how you feel afterwards. It could be that you caught everyone you dealt with on a bad day - that happened to my best friend and she is very happy with her OB office now. It's really your call! I see you live in Brookline, and I don't know any doctors there personally, but I use Mt. Auburn Practice for Women in Watertown on Mt. Auburn Street - not TOO far from Brookline but not necessarily down the street. My dr. is Leslie MacDonald, who I love, and who got me two healthy girls after two higher-risk pregnancies (hypertension). Good luck with whatever you do!! Congrats about your pregnancy!

you need to be happy with the place you are going to be visiting for the next 9 + months. Find a new office! Merry Christmas!
