Service Line Warranties - Feedback?

We are using them after our city "endorsed" them last year as well. I called my insurance agent for his advice and he was aware of them. He felt that my neighborhood was a good fit for the service and the price was reasonable, so we purchased it. A few months later my neighbor across the street had roots in her lines! And i'm sure we do, too.

When a similar notice came for water lines a few months later - but not from the city, from the agency directly - my insurance agent did not think it was necessary (although not very expensive, either). So we skipped that one.

My city is improving sewer lines and sent me a notice that I needed to have my line to the street looked at. Longer story there. Anyway they included a list of people who provided this service. These businesses did not "partner" with the city, the city got no kick back. Are you sure that there is a connection between the business and the city other than the city listing them as being able to provide a service?

I've used a home warranty and found it to be very useful. We had both our swamp and refrigerated air conditioner and a hot water heater replace for minimal dollars. I suggest that at $5/month it is worth it to subsribe.

Later: I might look at the partnership in a different way. It's a way to add to the city's assets without having taxes increased. Sounds creative to me. I am basing this thought on extemely limited info. smile

I'm not a big fan of insurances, in general.
But water, gas, sewer line repair/replacement can be very costly.
We don't have those insurances, but we have "a guy" in the family if, God forbid, something gives our. (We have "a guy" for most stuff, it seems!)
If you know you have an issue which will most likely hit the fan, just be sure EXACTLY what this does and does not cover.

This is a very interesting insurance proposal, but unless they also take care of sewer problems under the house, I would pass. We live in a neighborhood built from 1972 to 1976, and all our problems are broken pipes under the houses.

Some homeowners policies allow you to endorse this coverage onto your current policy. I have this endorsement on my policy and it costs $10 a year, but subject to my deductible. If you already have tree root issues, then they likely won't add it, but you could check.
