Tree Roots in Plumbing???

Getting the tree roots out would not solve your problem for very long. Does not really seem worth the money to pay that much without fixing the sewer line. Now if he meant that it would be $850 to fix the hole in the line besides clearing away the tree roots, that might be worthwhile. But if it's just for taking out the roots, you would be wasting your money even if that is a good price. You need to look into whether you are going to have to replace the sewer line, and get a price for replacing the line. I use Bobby Renfro, who works a lot in Mesquite; his number is ###-###-####. I am a handyman by trade and I do a lot of plumbing work. This is a very common problem. I have several questions for you. First, how old is the house? It would need to be many years old before roots might be a problem. What is he proposing to do for the $850.00? This might or might not be a good price depending upon what he is proposing to do. Yes, roots can keep coming back but there are things that can be done to slow them down. Is he saying that it is the main sewer? No, this is not a problem that you need to have repaired in the next couple of days. I would definitely get more than one price. DO NOT depend on just his word alone. He might very well be telling you the truth but then again he might be counting on your ignorance of the issue.

We live in an older house and over the summer had this same problem. We ended up spending almost $6000 to fix it because of the extent of the pipe that needed to be replaced. They had to dig a trench along our front yard all the way out to the connection with the city water line at the sidwalk. We also didn't have any water for about two days. That sounds really cheap to me considering what we had to have done, but maybe it is a much smaller segment/easier to get to. I would try to get a second opinion and get it fixed sooner rather than later. It is only going to get to be a bigger and worse problem. Insurance will not cover this at all either since the pipe is outside. Since you just moved in are you still covered by the home warrenty, that may pay for it?

We had clay pipe that was not holding up to the roots so we had it replaced. I think the price for replacing the bad segment was something like $2500.

Roots will sneak in anywhere they can and they will come back seeking the water. You might be able to cut down the tree to stop the problem, if you are sure which tree it is. I would get a couple of more experts to give you some advice. Try asking the Mamma's another question just about good plumbers in your area. Free estimates is a good place to start to make your decision.
