Seeking Other Grandparents Raising Young Children

My husband and I are raising 2 Granddaughters 1 is 5 and 1 is 9. Although this wasn't in our retirement plan, we love having them and enjoy them very much. Our problem is finding friends in somewhat the same position. People our age don't have little kids and people with little kids have nothing in common with people our age. We are in the Richardson area.

The Audelia Road branch of the Dallas library has monthly meetings and activities for grandparents raising kids. It's not too far from Richardson, on Audelia between Royal and Walnut Hill.

Call the Methodist Church located on Spring Creek Parkway in East Plano. They use to have really good support groups. Good luck.

Aw thats sweet of you! I was raised by my Grandparents and would be nothing without them.
Join parents groups reguardless of age. You have more in common than you think. Besides you might meet some of the grandparents. Put yourself out there and dont be an age-ist
Good luck and you are doing a wonderful and important thing.

Hats off to you and your husband for raising your granddaughters. What about joining having them join a Girl Scout Troop and help out with the troop. My parents are helping me raise my daughter and they fit right in with my daughter's friends parents.

I can't really help you with your request but I wanted to commend you for taking care of you grandchildren. I know it's a joy to have them in your lives but it's also a big commitment and responsibility for any age! I'm 44 (I have a 2 yr and 4 yr.) and kind of have the same problem. Most of the moms my age have children going into collage and I feel kind of the odd man out in most groups now. All the mommies I know are at least 10 to 15 years younger than me. But maybe being surrounded by all the youth it will keep me young. (?) ")
Best Regards,
C.

Here is another grandma raising grandchildren. Their ages are 16, 14, 13, and 3 yrs old. We have had the three oldest for almost 10 years. The little one joined her siblings alittle over a year ago. Would love to have other grandparents like us to chat with.

A little about me:
I am almost 60 with several health concerns that slow me down. My husband is 65, not retired, he is working out of state at the moment. I love to read and sew when I get the chance.

Bless you for steppping in for your grandchildren. I would like to suggest www.meetup.com. There is a wide variety of groups on that website and you may find just what you are looking for. I joined a mom's group off that site that was wonderful. I also joined a book club that has been fabulous as well. Good Luck!

Hats off to you. I had custody of my grandson for a while, too. The court ordered him to spend time with his maternal grandparents in NY, so I'm an empty nester again. It wasn't what I planned, but I really loved it and OHHHH do I miss him!!

Ask their pediatrician if he/she knows of any support groups for grandparents raising grandkids. I'm sure there are some out there.
