My two-year-old has a ringworm on his scalp. His pediatrician prescribed "Griseofulvin" for SIX LONG WEEKS! I've been giving my son the oral medication and applying a topical anti-fungal cream on the site, for a week now, but five more weeks seems like forever! Any of you mamas ever experience this?
It does take some time. The dr did prescribe cream for mine when they had it and Nizoral shampoo (at Walgreens, cvs, etc) is awesome go wash every day before applying at bedtime. Just be patient and consistent--most importantly!
Keep it clean and dry before applying and it will go away. Keep his nails trimmed just in case he scratches while you are not looking, because it the ringworm can spread.
both my boys have had ring worm i put "monkey's blood" (iodine) on them and in 2 or 3 days it was gone and over with!! My oldest sons dr perscribed something and it wasnt really working at all, so my hubbys grandpa told me to put that on it, i figured it cant help, and sure enough in 2 days it was gone, so when my younger son got it (both had it at the same age funny huh??!!) i just put that on him i didnt even bother taking him to the dr., after only putting that stuff on once it was gone!! Yes girl i had one and it seem like it took for ever for it to go away but i did the same the cream and you can also use a dan.shampoo like selson blue worked great on mine good luck hope it gets better.have a good day
My son had that when he was four and it was nasty stuff. We got it flavored which helped somewhat. At first we were treating it topically. My son has allergies and ended up having an allergic reaction to the ringworm months later. He eneded up with a large crusty painful infection on his scalp which resulted in a large bald spot. (he wore a lot of hats) We are very lucky that his hair has grown back. This is not the normal reaction so don't worry. My point is that our dermatololgist told me that anytime there is ringworm on the scalp, you should treat with an oral antifungal like you are doing.
It will seem long but you'll get though it!
Eeew, sorry, ringworm is a pain! Yes, it does take a while to get rid of. It sounds like you're doing the right thing.
I just wanted to ask - do you know the source of your son's infection? He can be re-infected if he comes in contact with the source again, and ringworm can spread! My brother had problems with this when we were kids (although he was susceptible to infection while my sister & I were not). I can't remember what Mom used exactly, but it was the same cream we used to get rid of it on the cows :) Worked great, but took a few weeks to clear up.
