Hello! I have horrible menstrual cramps, and I am considering having an ablasion (burning the lining of the uterus). For those who have had an ablasion, did it help with your menstrual cramps? Do you still get periods, or just some light spotting - or nothing at all? Did your ablasion interfere with your hormones at all? Are you happy you had it done, or do you regret it? Anything you can tell me is much appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

After I had my ablation? I was lucky - I didn't have any cycles for almost 18 months.

No problems with hormones.

Never regretted it. After 18 months, when I had something really weird happen (started bleeding like I had a miscarriage), we decided to do a complete hysterectomy. **THAT** I have NO regrets over!! Oh my word!! Talk about feeling "FREE"!!!

I was out of work for 2 days - just to let myself "chill" after the surgery and was back and doing normal stuff that week. Everyone is different. I'm glad I had it done.

It was an option that was given to me by my Dr and after serious thought, I opted for complete hysterectomy.. Ovaries and everything.. And went in the hormone patch a few years.

This was the best thing I ever did for myself. I look:feel better than ever. I was in good physical shape going into surgery and had no complications.

My Dr said it would be likely to have to re-do the procedure. I didn't want to take chances, I wanted all procedures to stop. Therefore my decision was best for me,

My SIL did ablation and 5 yrs later had hysterectomy.

I know my surgery isn't the best option for everyone. You just have to weigh your pros and cons.

Feel free to PM if you want

I've heard of having it done to lessen heavy bleeding.

From what I've found though Google, it sounds like an ablation can make cramps worse for some women.

I had mine just about a year ago. I still get very light periods that maybe last 1-2 days, no tampons, just liners. No cramps but my body still goes thru ovulation, so boobs get sore and so do my ovaries. :( Did not interfere with my sex life and did not mess with hormones. YES VERY HAPPY I DID IT!

I had one back in 2010 and it was a couple months after a miscarriage. I still get cramps on occasion and very light spotting but not every month.

I love not having a period, but sometimes will still have menstrual symptoms (cramps, headache, etc.).

I was 39 at the time so I don't know how age effects it or if that would matter. I can say that my sex drive is not as strong and I gained almost 50lbs. within a month of the procedure, but that I think has more to do with the miscarriage then the ablation.

My heavy bleeding was caused by some of the placenta being left behind and the doctor didn't know it until I was on the operating table. The doctor never suggested a D & C after my miscarriage, she said it wasn't necessary at the time.

Before my ablation, I had a period every two weeks, flooded through my clothes, even using tampons with pads, and had cramps so bad that I would double over and vomit.
After, I had nothing, No spotting (once the initial spotting form the procedure itself stoppped), no cramping, no PMS - nothing. Bonus - no getting pregnant, and my sex drive was not negatively affected. If anything, sex got better and I wanted it more once I was no longer bleeding and hurting all the time.
It has been eight years and I have not had the first spot or cramp.
My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

I had an ablation, but I had fibroids so I bled continually (lightly) until my hysterectomy. If I didn't have fibroids, it would've been great
