So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great ideas. My parents are in their 70's, but still very active & adventurous . My dad does have a bad back so I will let him know about the hiking through the rain forest. I will try to discourage them from renting a car, but I know my dad will anyway. Thanks again, now I'm going to have to start saving for my own trip!

We went there for our honeymoon. We loved the old forts in Old San Juan, the city itself was not for us. The Caribe Hilton was our big splurge hotel and it was fabulous.
We went to the island of Culebra and spent 3 nights there- it is SO quiet and peaceful. We stayed at Tamarindo Estates- isolated so not great with little kids, but peaceful tiny apartments are nice. The town on Culebra is SO quirky and fun.
My husband is into astronomy, so we went to the Arecibo Radio Telescope- it is an engineering marvel and the drive to get there is really beautiful.
Our favorite place to stay the night was in the middle of the island on an old coffee plantation. "Hotel la Casa Grande" The scenery was beautiful and we could drive to lots of places.
One of the best times we had was when our trip to a "national forest" didn't go so well and we ended up going to an ancient site that had "ball courts", fertility goddesses, all sorts of relics from the original people of the island. It wasn't planned and it was fun.
Swing by the book store and pick up the Lonely Planet and Fodor's guides to Puerto Rico. They are good.
Have a GREAT TIME.

I highly suggest taking a trip to Vieques... it is a short 20 min flight off the island and it is so peaceful - beautiful ect... well worth a visit. We stayed for 4 days and loved it. Old San Juan is also great.

Ahhhh Puerto Rico...I love that island. I was just there in June. There is so much to do, it depends on what they like to do. Are they adventurous or more relaxed. Mary B gave great suggestions, those are all places they would love to visit. They have to go to "El Morro" very historic about Christoper Columbus. The rainforest is a great place to go but I will warn you, there is a lot of walking. You can climb up all the way to the bottom, it's a long walk but oh so worth it because there is the waterfall that everyone goes in, the water is ice cold but they will appreciate it because it is so hot. Nice place to take pictures to. Fajardo is a city they can drive to and there is a humongous hotel there called "El Conquistador" (the conqueror)it is gorgeous, if they stay there they can take a boat to an island about 10 minutes away where only hotel guests are there. It's a private island that belongs to the hotel. The most popular beach in Puerto Rico is Isla Verde, very turistic and tons of things to do. There is a hotel there called "El San Juan Hotel and Casino" talk about night life....the party starts on Thurday night. It's a 5 star hotel it is so impecable that I go to just people watch. Look up Vieques that is where our troops go for target practice, beautiful island as well as Culebra, but those are aways out, there might not be enough time for that. Did I mention Old San Juan? They can take a relaxing stroll, look at the old houses there are great restaurants you can eat outside and have a nice tropical dream. Oh my God, you are making me want to go back :)

I have been there 5 times. My husband was born & raised there thru college. so we now visit every year & bring our daughter. Its a beautiful island but very americanized. every restaurant we have here~ they have. everyone speaks some English. Weather is beautiful always 80's never too hot or too cold. The touristy place to be is Old San Juan, if they don't have a hotel yet, I would recommend the Marriot or the Caribe Hilton. they are close to everything & very walkable or short taxi ride to the sights in downtown with the forts, castles & old brick streets just like in spain. These hotels have casinos & nice private beaches. catering to american & turists. The downtown is rich in history & beautiful buildings & nice shops & restaurants. There is the old castle, fort (El Morro), paseo de princessa~ a path way below the fort along the Ocean~perfect for nice leisurely walks. a park called "Parque de Palomas" or pigeon park great views & nice place to sit & feed the birds. there is also a free trolley that takes you from one turist spot to another in downtown.
if they want more nature, they can set up tours thru the hotel to visit the rainforest, caves of Camuy, snorkeling trips to the smaller private island & things thru the hotel. it maybe more expensive, but worth the hassle of renting a car & trying to navigate around there. If they are very adventurous then I would suggest renting a car & driving to the rainforest, ect ~ people there drive crazy & streets are not lit well & so it makes driving when you don't know where your going stressful & dangerous in my opinion, & you need to be an expert parellel parker! Old San Juan is a nightmare to drive thru with tons of one way streets, dead ends & very narrow roads~ I would not recommend renting a car to drive it, just use the free shuttle & park at a hotel if possible. We get lost or stuck in traffic everytime we try & my hubby is a native!
there are two islands off the coast Vieques & Culebra that are both great for a day of snorkeling, or sun bathing on beautiful prestine beaches, but not much else. there is an inexpensive ferry that goes from a town called Fajardo to each island daily but Fajardo is about 45 minutes from San Juan.
I hope this is helpful & they have a great time, if you want to know anything specific just ask~ I am happy to help.
