My friends and I are planning a big 30th b-day trip to Puerto Rico in early 2007 and I was looking for any feedback on destinations, good or bad, from anyone who's been? We're all kind of doing this blind, though looking at renting a beachfront condo (6 of us are going) in either Isla Verde or Loiza/Rio Grande areas. Def. want to be in decent proximity to San Juan airport and Old San Juan for nights out. Thanks!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your input! We're still debating, but are down to condos in 2 locations right around San Juan. I'm very much looking forward to it! Thanks for the suggestions on what to visit while we're there!

We went last year & had a great time. We stayed at the El Conquistador resort & spa. Beautiful resort with it's own private island and beach. The resort has a spa, casino, & shopping. It has a great view of the rain forest. It took us about 35 min( I think), to get to Old San Juan. I really don't know exactly how long, because we stopped at the Bacardi distillery first. It's a bit far from the main areas. The food is wonderful, but very expensive. We stayed in the Las Casitas villages. They are private condo's with butler service.

I went to Puerto Rico in the late '90s. The fort (near or in San Juan) is worth visiting for an afternoon. However I'd really, really like to return JUST to see that rain forest again! They call it 'el junque'. Actually I'm not sure how to spell it, but it's pronounced (el yun*kay). We didn't have time to really see it, and ran through it for 30 minutes. It was so lush & beautiful. There are shapes of foliage so different from what we have here at home. And the smell of the forrest is so wonderful! If I remember correctly, it was located near San Juan. Everyone warned us not to be in the forest after closing time (which I remember to be at 4:30), because our belongings (and the rental car) would not be safe. This is why we ran out of time since we arrived at 4:00.

Have a great time!

I haven't stayed in any actual resort spots...But I can tell you that definiately staying in San Juan at a hotel is probably best. During the week nights the streets are packed and its easier if you can walk to places.
I hope it all works out for you!!! Its an absolute great place to visit!! Beautiful and Fun!!

I am half Puerto Rican and Guatemalan. I have been to Puerto Rico many times but my experiences are different than that of tourist since I stay with family. There is however an attraction that is a must see. They are called "Las Cuevas de Camuy" (the caves of Camuy). It is a tour that is really neat to check out. It is in Camuy,P.R. but I am not sure how far this will be from where you might be considering to stay. There is another similar tour called "Las Cavernas de Camuy" (the caverns of Camuy). It's similar to the previous tour. Also, I had a cousin who used to work at "El Conquistador" resort so we went ne time to spend the day there and it was beautiful. I hope some of this was helpful. Good luck planning your trip and have a great time.

My husband and I went to San Juan last year and we had a great time. We stayed in what was New San Juan and loved it because you we could walk everywhere and the prices of food and drinks were reasonable. The hotel pool was not on the beach it was on top of the hotel, so we didn't get the beach experience of Jamaica or Mexico, but there are a lot of new hotels on the beach. I'm sure you would have fun there. We will go back at some point. Best wishes for your trip!

I have visited PR many times but have always stayed at the opposite end of the island, in Rincon PR. Rincon is famous for it's surfing beach. I did, however, have a chance to visit El Morro in San Juan, it was amazing, it's visable from the plane when you are landing. If you do have a chance to visit it, I recommend taking along a cold bottle of water, walking around the fortress can give you a good workout!
Have fun!

I've heard great things. I have a friend who travels to PR for business with Walgreens, and says it is rather unknown, and beautiful. No idea where to stay, but this place sounds familiar, and looks great:
