Problem 13 Yr Old. Need Serious Help!

My boyfriend got custody of his 13 yr old a year and a half ago. For the past year, we have had problems with her lying and stealing, and serious hygene issues. She refuses to bring her clothes out to get washed, won't wear sanitary supplies for her monthly(using tiolet paper instead then dumping the bloody tissue in her drawers, pillows, etc). She refuses to have anything to do with me because I am not her mom. Last night, she got caught stealing again and had a violent temper tantrum, where she attempted to kick the computer table into me while I was holding my 17m old. We have tried everything from grounding, taking her door off her room, and taking away some of her thing. She has been told repeatedly that she can earn them back. She refuses. She also has a history of running away. She ran away for the 3rd time last night. We would like to do counseling for her, but feel it won't do any good with all the lies she tells. She has even told some kids and their parents that her dad and I are abusive satanists, and that we refuse to fed her. Can anyone help?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,
I worked with teens with severe behavior problems. There is no quick fix, it took her 13 years to get to where she is and it's going to take time and professional help for her to straighten out. I suggest that you either admit her to a psychiatric hospital for adolscents or, during one of her tantrums, call the police and have her Baker Acted to a psyc. facility where she will get the help she needs. I know this sounds harsh, but it truly is the best and safest way to handle this. You not only have her safety to be concerned about but you have other children to whom you have a safety responsibility as well. I don't know what area you live in, but try Deveraux - a Behavioral Treatment Center for Adolscents or check into your local hospital where they will have a psyc. unit where she could be admitted and later transferred to an appropriate level of care. If you do this...and I really hope you do....yes, she will need the majority of the treatment and counciling but they will include the parents especially as they prepare her to re-enter society and the family unit. I hope this has been helpful. If you have questions, please feel free to ____@____.com
Take care,
L.

Have you considered that no one has got to the cause of the issues. Have you spoken to her counceller at school? In fact how is she doing at school. Why is living with her father, what has her life looked like up to now that would have her react this way. Sometimes people just want to be heard. we dont give teenagers that respect and we could learn alot from listening to them.

Hi K.,

I would suggest you and your bf call your local Sheriff's Dept. and ask about their CINS-FINS (Child/ren In Need of Services - Families In Need of Services) program. These programs are specifically designed for troubled youngsters and their families. You might even be able to get the phone number for CINS-FINS from your daughters school Guidance Counselor.

Hope this helps ya out.

Wow! Sorry to hear that!

There is the House of Hope you could call. Don't know if they can help, though. The county may offer help in the form of individual and group counseling. Also, some guidance counselors at her school may have a list of numbers. But most likely her father will have to get her the help, if you are not her real mother that is. I hope he will get involved. I will pray she gets the help she needs, because she is headed for disaster if there is not intervention, fast.

May God bless you with the right answers. I can't say for sure that involving DCF would be good or bad. They have a reputation for interfering at times. I know they mean well, but unless you get a very good DCF counselor, it could be a long investigation.

Write me and I could try to help you find contacts.
GOD BLESS!
