Does anyone have a good recipe for play dough that you'd be willing to share? I just started home schooling my 4 year old since we travel with my husband when his job takes him out of town. Money is tight and I'd rather make the play dough, but I do need it soon.

What can I do next?

K.,

Hi! I have tried A LOT of play dough recipes and have finally found the most FABULOUS one! Here is the link:

http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/parkdaleps/Pathfinder/Scott/pla...

I just tried the link and it pops it right up. My kids LOVE adding different seasonings and Koolaid flavors! The lemon Koolaid stinks though. And your color isn't yellow - it's neon greenish yellow.

Oh! And if you put it in a tight container and keep it in the fridge....it lasts a REALLY long time! BYE-BYE STORE STUFF!

Have fun!

PLAY DOUGH:
1 c. flour, 1 c. oil, 1/2 c. salt, 1 tsp. tartar, food coloring. Cook stirring until the mixture pulls away from the sides of pan in a big lump. Take out and kneed until smooth and cool. Can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Don't add water or put into plastic container while still hot.

FINGER PAINT:
3 tbsp. sugar, 1/2 c. corn starch, 2 c. cold water
Mix sugar and corn starch and then add water. Cook on low stirring constantly until well blended. When finished add drop of dish soap to make clean up easy. Divide into 4 or 5 portions and then add food coloring. Use paper or cheap paper plates for the kids to paint on.

Hi K.,

Seems like you already got a lot of good responses for play dough recipes. I thought I would chime in and recommend a wonderful book that has recipes for all kinds of different types of play dough (regular, oily, bouncy ...) along with other really great arts and crafts ideas. It is called "First Art : Art Experiences for Toddlers and Twos" by MaryAnn F. Kohl. I have gotten a lot of good and inexpensive ideas out of it, and even though your son is four, you should be able to find plenty of things he can do in there.

Best Wishes,

A.

Play Dough

1 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
1-cup water
1-tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon Alum
2-tablespoon vanilla
Food coloring
Mix dry ingredients. Add oil water and coloring. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until it reaches a consistency of mashed potatoes. Remove from heat add vanilla

This is the one I uses; I found that you need to cook it a little longer then it said. I cook it until it forms a ball on my spoon and looks like play dough. Other wise I found it to sticky. I also don’t add the vanilla. My 6-year old thinks the dog can eat it if it smells good. It’s just for taste anyway. Alum is a pickling spice, found in the caning or spices at the store. I have also found it at the dollar store, and buy it here for play dough only. We have made it with out coloring and then add it after. The kids think this is neat as they can make marble play dough. You can bake it for fun save project. 250f until dry then I coat it with a clear spray.

This is the best play dough recipe that I've come across. It has a very smooth texture, not at all grainy like the commercial Play-dough or many other recipes. It also smells great with the addition of Kool-Aid. I have made many batches of this over the years. Hope that you enjoy this fun project.

1 cup white flour
2 T. cream of tartar
1/4 cup salt
2 tsp. food coloring
1 T. vegetable oil
Med. sauce pan
1 cup water
Airtight ctn. or Ziploc bag
If you want to add a scent, to the play dough, add a a package of unsweetened Kool-Aid, coordinating the flavor with the color you are making.

Mix flour, salt and cream of tartar in a medium sauce pan. Add water, food coloring and oil and Kool-Aid if using. Stir over medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Don't worry if the mixture looks like a globby mess; it will turn into dough! When the mixture forms into a ball in the center of the pot, remove from the burner and let it cool. Then take it out of the pot and put it on a floured surface and knead it. When you are done, put it in a Ziploc bag or airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

I found some great recipes just by searching on the internet. One has Kool Aid to make is smell good as well as give it some color (I still sometimes add food coloring to intensify the color.)

I am rushing to get kids ready for school but thought that would be a good place for you to start. If I find some time later today I will send more detail.

Best wishes!

Hi Kim,

I done it before, but that was a long time ago and I got the recipe from a preschool teacher, so you might try a calling a preschool or local rec center that has toddler classes. Try to google or ask.com and see what they say.
