Got this one from my daughter's kindergarten teacher. I've only made it and sent it to school but my daugther seemed to like it:
Gingerbread Play Dough Recipe

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon ground cloves
1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup water

Combine ingredients in large bowl. Mix together well and knead them until smooth. Store the dough in an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to use.

This recipe I've used several times, it's very flexible. I can't say it necessarily tastes good but it is completely safe to eat:

PLAY DOUGH
2 cups flour (white, not wheat)
1 cup salt
2 cups water
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
(options: food coloring, flavorings, kool-aid--which both colors and flavors **I usually add neon food coloring which makes all kinds of fun colors)

Mix well. Cook over medium heat--stir constantly--until a ball forms. Put on waxed paper and knead until smooth (careful--it'll be hot). GOOD LUCK!

K.,

Here is an edible recipe for you that doesn't contain peanut butter.

Cream Cheese Play Dough

8 oz. package of cream cheese
1/2 cup non-fat dry milk
1 tablespoon honey
crackers or bread slices

Combine cream cheese, milk and honey in a bowl and mix until well blended. Mold sculptures on was paper.

Storage: Unused portions MUST BE STORED in an airtight container and kept refrigerated! Because cream cheese is perishable, use the expiration date on the cream cheese package as your guide for how long you can keep this play dough.

Note: The shapes can then be placed on crackers or bread slices, decorated with edibles (celery or carrot slivers, raisins, dried fruit pieces, nuts, or seeds for a healthy snack... then eat!

You may also want to consider "pudding painting". You can take the already made containers of fat free pudding and have the kids "paint" their designs with their hands. Save the paintings and kids can eat while they go and/or eat what's leftover.

The peanut recipe sounds yummy -- but just a thought -- I am alergic to peanuts and found out as a child by playing with "Peanut Playdoh" You may want to find out if any of the kids that are coming are alergic to peanuts before you decide on that one.

I am sorry that I don't remember the full recipe for it but I was watching John and Kate plus 8 and she made it for the kids. It was equal parts honey and peanut butter and something else. Maybe you can find the program on TLC. Her Kids loved it.

How about using sugar cookie dough? Just add your own food coloring to make the colors you want.

When is the party? there is a place you can order cookie play dough from and it comes in containers just like real play dough.
1-800-bakery.com and click on cookies. If not enough time to get them which if you order today you should get by the 6th. You can buy the rolls of sugar cookie in a tube and just add color yourself and probably a little flour so it is not sticky. christmas sugar cookie dough works also. great thing is they can eat what they make either raw or cook it so they can take it home with them. Have fun
