Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a decent photo program? My husband recently suprised me with a beautiful Nikon DSLR camera. I have taken tons of pictures of the kids already but I would like to edit them. I am hoping to find something that I can produce nice photos with even as an inexperienced "photographer." Something with a color splash feature as well as other "filter" features and retouch featutes.

I am still learning to use my camere to it's fullest potential I and plan to advance my skills in the future. For now I would like to play around and see what develops. No pun intended :)

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I have not printed anything yet but I did have a chance to play around with the free editing tools and I think this will do for now. I am so excited!!!!!!! Once I develop my skills I may purchase a prgram. for now picknic seems to have most of what I want for free.

Well, photoshop is the best, but you can use other programs such as gimp (for free). Even picasa is easy and awesome, but not many options. Picnik.com is really neat, though you do have to pay to upgrade your account for more details. They are not in the same depth as photoshop, but good for beginners.

picasa.google.com
The have a photo editor that works really well, and is free. It does not have all the bells and whistles that photoshop does, but for editing snap shots and playing with photos, I have found that it works really well.
Welcome to the world of DSLR cameras. My favorite part of ours is the lack of shutter lag time from when you push the button, to when it takes the photo. :)
I have used Picasa for about 3 years or so, and love it. It makes sharing the photos easy (if you want to) and makes keeping track of the photos a total breeze. :) It is installed on your computer, so other than the initial download, you can work on everything locally.
Good luck, and have fun with the camera and photos!

I have found www.picnik.com to be fantastic for editing photos... you don't have to download anything, you can upload any photo and edit it for free, and for $20/year, you gain access to a ton of more sophisticated editing tools and fun things... I wanted to try photoshop, but it's expensive, and not that user friendly... but picnik is soooo easy to use, even for a novice. Yet, if you play with the various tools, you can make some really professional looking edits! I love it! (and I've tried other online editing services... in my opinion, none that I tried even compare...)

Picasa is great for organizing pictures and has some basic photo editing options like crop, red eye removal, color corrections, etc.. It also coordinates with Picnik for about $20/year if you want more options (Picasa is free).

You can use Shutterfly. Once you upload your photo's you can play with them. My favorite thing is to make photo book. Any online storage site gives you editing programs. However, if you want a bit more you will most likely have to purchase an on-line program.
