Give him half a dose of liquid children's Sudafed. A small family style pharmacy should be able to order it from Rugby. It's about $4 per bottle.

My pharmacist just ordered mine last week. The large chain pharmacies do not have much ability to actually order meds. They get what they sell and not much more. So go to a small family style one, locally owned.

It will help the drainage tubes to clear out by making to goo much more runny. Then the drainage will go where it's supposed to go.

Warm compress on eyes and do have a pediatrician check him out. He could be having an allergic reaction, in which case, you do want to use Benadryl, Claritin or another allergy-relief medicine. I'd see a pediatrician first, however, to ensure that it's not a bacterial or viral pink eye, or he could give it to others.

Sounds like conjunctivitis, you need to call his doctor.

You need to get him to the doctor. You can't tell if he has bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. Both of them require specialized eyedrops. Bacterial conjunctivitis is communicable - viral isn't. However only the doctor can tell the difference, and you need to know which it is.

If it's viral, the doctor can give you a note for school or daycare saying he can be there.

Ok, does he have an antibiotic for his ear infection? It might be an eye infection that will be helped by the antibiotic.
Have you tried an over the counter allergy med? The generic zyrtec or Claritin might help. Otherwise, you could check with the pharmacist about a specific eye drop med for allergies. Something like patenol.

He might have pink eye.
I wouldn't fool around with this.
He will need to see a doc.
If he wakes up with funky, sticky eyes, just use a warm washcloth to remove that.
I don't think this is allergy related.

(While I value most advice given on this forum, please do not take advice given here as medical direction.
Do NOT order and give your 22 month old a medicine without his pediatrician advising it.)

Call your pediatrician and talk to the nurse tomorrow morning.
Good luck.

Welcome to mamapedia!!!

Are his eyes bloodshot as well? Do they itch during the day? Is it possible he has pink eye/conjunctivitis?

You can have his blood drawn and have them test him for allergies. However, he has to be anti-histamine free for 72 hours or more so the tests are accurate.

You can make his bedroom as allergy free as possible. Go to Target and purchase items like these...

Make sure there is an air purifier in his room. Then keep whatever allergens - dust, dust mites, etc. down by vacuuming his room daily. If there is carpet in his room - sorry - if he has allergies like that - it has to go. Get hardwood floors put in - they are easier to clean and don't hold allergens like carpeting.

If he has drapes - take them down and clean them. Replace them with blinds instead of fabric - again - won't hold the allergens like fabric....

Before he goes to bed - you can give him children's liquid Claritin or Zrytec. Check with your pharmacist to ensure that he is old enough and the right dosage. You can also check with your pediatrician.

good luck!

If he already has an ear infection I think it's probably that he's just congested and it's coming out his eyes. This happened to my daughter too, although not quite to the point of her eyes gluing shut, but she did have mucus in them. If he's already on antibiotics then I would add some allergy medicine to the mix.

I've had sticky eyes as the result of allergies and infection. Either could be going on. However, because he has an ear infection I suggest that it's an infection. Call the pediatrician's advice nurse and ask about this.

I suggest that there is little to be done if it's an infection. It's been my experience that doctors do not prescribe an additional medication for the eyes. I'm assuming he's already on an antibiotic for the ear infection. Ask his doctor.

What I do when my eyes stick shut is to use a warm compress to soften the stuff and then gently wipe it away. There is nothing that can be done to prevent the oozing. In fact, if it's either an allergy or an infection you want the stuff to ooze out because it's getting rid of the stuff causing the eye to ooze.

For allergies go to Nate.com and check it out. It is non-invasive and works not to have allergies anymore.
