My 5 Months Old Sounds Hoarse, Is There Anything to Be Concerned About?

My daughter is 5 months old and not extremely vocal yet. However, when she does make sounds and cries she sounds hoarse. I talked to a nurse at the doctors and she indicated that hoarseness usually occurs with congestion (which my daughter does not have). Otherwise, she said not to worry about it unless it gets worse. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a sign of a problem?

My kids would get hoarse when they had croup, but you would know that if you child was barking like a seal at night. Coup is always worse at night and cool moist air is best.

Hi C..
My 2.5 year old daughter is also hoarse. I took her into the doctor because she's been this way for 3-4 days and has had a small fever, but the doctor said that there's a virus going around that causes this. I hope this helps. With your daughter's age, maybe the other's are right and it's reflux. Good luck. If she's acting happy and is fever free, I'd say she's ok.

My first thought would be reflux. It is not uncommon and can leave the vocal cords irritated. It is frequently undiagnosed in all ages. My son had reflux as a baby. The other thought is that it is an allergy or some type of environmental irritant...could even be cleaning products.

It could be from congestion or reflux will also cause it. Sometimes they can have it and you don't even realize it. Check with you doc.
