Hello Moms,
I just wanted to know which cities are best to raise a family in Georgia? We have a 8yr old son, and a 3yr old daughter. My husband and I are looking for a good school system, activities for the children, friendly neighbors, low crime rate, and overall a good friendly place to call home. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Let me explain to everyone, my husband is Active Duty Military and his orders here will be up in Sep. So as of now they are not sure where he will be stationed, he's switching to AGR, so he has a choice between VA, GA, OR NORTH CAROLINA. Thank you in advance.

It depends on where you need to be. North of Atlanta I would suggest Roswell, Alpharetta or Cumming. All are family friendly neighborhoods with good schools and lots of activities.

Check out Roswell. Great Parks & Rec, loads of local free events, super neighborhood parks, wonderful schools and close enough to most everything else in Atlanta.

We live in Sandy Springs (just north of Atlanta) and love it here. The school system is great and there are so many fun things for the kids to do here. We moved here last year from Chicago and are enjoying the mild winters - we got to play in snow a couple times, but otherwise snow free and not too cold.

I have lived in Rome almost 15 years (leaving for college and first jobs) since moving here from the St. Louis area because of my mom's job. It is a relatively small town (about 35,000- county about 96,000). It is about an hour northwest of Atlanta and a little over an hour southwest of Chattanooga, TN. It is a fantastic small community. We have community theater, two 4 year colleges, a 2 year college, and a tech school. We also have 2 major hospitals and a major medical clinic which are large employers here.
We have two wonderful school districts Rome City and Floyd County (county is a charter system). We have a great Parks & Rec department, YMCA, a library with a great deal of kids activities. A variety of churches and religious organizations (though the majority are baptist, we do have a Catholic Church, a Jewish temple, and many other protestant churches).
We also have a large number of volunteer opportunities with everthing from working with AIDS patients, cancer patients, animals and environmental groups. We are also rated one of the top tennis towns in the Southeast and host numerous large sporting events (softball and tennis tournies, football championships, etc). We are also home to the Rome Braves a minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. We host the Rome International Film Festival each year too.
It is a small town, but I have grown to love it and the "big city" is only a short drive away.

I grew up in Brunswick, which consists of Bwk, and two islands: St. Simon's and Jekyll. My mom was a public school teacher in the area and I went to public school from K-12. I don't know stats on the school system but I graduated from high school and went straight to college and finished in four years. It's on the coast, the islands are big tourist draw and Savannah and Jacksonville are both an hour away (plus Disney is about a 5 hour drive). It has grown in the decade since I have moved away but I have lots of friends raising families there and my parents have lots of friends enjoying retirement there.
I am going to answer your NC ? here too. I live on the NC/SC border in the foothills of the mountians. We love it! You can easily find small communities with good, small schools in western NC...I have family members and friends working in or attending the schools in Polk, Henderson, and Buncombe Counties and they are excellent. Asheville has a lot of alternative, charter, and magnet school options and they do have public transit, but I couldn't tell you if it is "good" or not :) So my vote is for the Ga coast or the NC mountians!

Hi Fellow Peachtree Denizen:

I relocated to GA from Southern California in April 2006 and am glad I did. Given that you are already on the East Coast, I think you'll have a decidely easier time of things than I did...... I had never lived anywhere except Cali.

Anyhoo, Cherokee County is where I live. Schools are great here, particularly in Holly Springs, which is where I'm at.

Good luck!

Columbia County is really good, located on the SC border , good schools low crime rate, 6 hospitals in the Augusta area. We are in Evans, my daughter is in the local gifted program. It is a really good program, the Public library is large and well stocked, it has a great playground and walking path. There is a state park 20 minutes up the road. We've got walmart , target and 5 grocery stores ( including an organic one) 10 mins away.

I lived in California all my life. My father is from GA. when he retired, he & mom moved here. She has had 2 heart surgeries, 1 stroke, developed Diabetes type 2 and barely survied pancrititis in the last 6 years. I moved here with my daughter for that reasaon. Before I say another word I was wondering, do you HAVe to move to GA? Or are you just thinking it'd be a nice state to live in?
