Mosquitos Attacking!

It is the time of year again to worry about mosquitos, however it seems to have started early this year and always the same problem. My now 4 year old son seems to be a magnet for these insects and I do not know what to do. He goes to bed and wakes up the other day with 9 bites on just one leg and 2 on his back. It is only the first week of March! This happens every year so far, they seem to love him. I have tried all kinds of creams and bug sprays before bed and during the day but it still happens. I have even tried to cloth him in long sleeves and pants and socks to sleep and they find areas still to bite. Any ideas? Thank you for any information you may have!

OMG there is one in the room with me now!!!! I hate those bugs!! My mom uses plain ol' skin so soft oil, and puts it in a spray bottle and it works wonderful. She has a billion in her back yard and she works out there continuously and I swear by that stuff! Not the kind with all the other things added, just like the kind you would put in or after a bath. etc

This is secondhand, or maybe thirdhand. My mom lives in Illinois and is raising my two nephews. They are in boy scouts. The boy scout leaders are using Vanilla mixed with water in a spray bottle. You have to be able to smell the vanilla. It is all natural and safe. They say it works better than anything else. They told my mom and other parents that the Farmers are making Gallons of it and take it everywhere with them. You can use products with vanilla in them, like body spray, etc. But it is just as easy to make your own. It is safe for skin and clothes and technically would be edible. She swears by it. She used to only use Avon Skin-so-soft, not anymore. It is vanilla to keep mosquitos away.

I have also heard of putting a dryer sheet in your pocket. But a little one might play with that.

K.,

I have had the same problem with my oldest son. Does your son drink lots of orange juice? My oldest does not drink milk, so he drinks lots of calcium fortified orange juice. It could be this... Mosquitoes like acidy blood.
OR
Do you have any animals? Don't take this the wrong way, I am a breeder, of cockapoos. It sounds like fleas. We had a horrible time with them last year. You may want to try putting some flea carpet powder down. It seems to work the best for us, and bombing the house every month or so. Walmart has some cinnamon smelling kind, that works great.
Maybe striping his bed, and having him sleep between freshly cleaned ones, each night, Don't make the bed up, just have him sleep in a big sheet with a blanket, all wrapped up.
I am sure your house is clean, and you have tried almost everything. We finally came to the conclusion that we had to re-clean everything, put frontline on the dogs, Every 4 weeks, and he finally stopped waking up with bits all over.
They can look like mosquitoes bites, but unless they are huge, more than likely they are something else.
ALSO
you may want to have him checked for Chicken Pox, I know it sounds crazy, but since we all get the vaccine to our kids now, I mistook red round marks for bits on my 2 yr old, during the summer last year, and it ended up being a mild case of Chicken Pox. The Dr says that the vaccine is not 100%, and any child can get a mild case.

Good luck, I've been there. Benadril will help him sleep at night, with all of the itches...

I am a mommy of 5 wonderful little ones.

My son has this problem along with myself. Try the Skin so Soft lotion by Avon. They also have a bug replent that can be used in the summer when he is outside. The lotion always seems to work.

I use the skin so soft oil and seems to keep them away. Bounce dryer sheets also help so you may want to tie one to his bed somewhere.

One of my daughters gets eaten up by mosquitos and ticks in the summer, until I started giving her garlic. They really must not think she is as sweet anymore because it almost completely stopped her getting bitten on.

Dear K.,

I grew up shooting Archery, and therefore out in the woods A LOT. Buy Avon's Skin So Soft and put it on your son when he gets out of the bath every night, or morning. This should help detour the misquitos.

Take care and God Bless :)

Good Morning K, Are you sure they at mosquito bites? I was wondering if you have seem them in the house or just assuming they are mosquitoes. Your detergent my be attracting them, any type of fragrance can attract them. One thing that has been Passed around the net for YEARS is the drier sheets tucked in pockets or belt loops when outside to ward them off. I have never tried it though.

On any type of bug bites I use the after bite stick on the gr kids. It stops the itching and reduces the swelling of bites.

God Bless and I hope you receive some great information and advice.

Try giving him some flaxseed oil. It's in the blood. Some people have the "smell" that mosquitos like and others do not. Try giving him some flaxseed oil for a few weeks and see if that helps. It takes a few days to get into his bloodstream and start emitting the "smell" that they don't like. It won't hurt him if it doesn't help him. Just a thought. Good luck and God Bless.

Have you tried any skin so soft by avon that is pretty good, also I had some home remedies emailed to me an I remember one of them saying to place a drier sheet in your pocket an that is supposed to keep mosquitos away. Make sure you have no water standing or high weedss as that is a major draw for them. I noticed one just the other day an was surprised to see them this early.

My mom always had us eat lots of garlic during the spring and summer. His body will naturally release the garlic (but don't worry you won't smell it) and it will keep the bugs away from him As well, I don't know if you go swimming a lot, but the chlorine in the pools will help keep the bugs away. I do the same with my son now and I have not had any issues with bug bites. The chiggers seemed to love my son.

Our daughter is a mosquito magnet, too. In the summer months when mosquitos are bad here, we put Avon Skin-So-Soft on her after her bath. We could even take her for an evening walk in her stroller and she wouldn't get bites. It's not poisonous like bug spray and it's a moisturizer, so we just skip the lotion after her bath and use it instead.

Last summer, we were having the same problem of our daughter getting bit at night. At first we also thought it was mosquitos and then found out it was actually fleas. We don't even have pets in our house! We were bringing them in on our pant legs and shoes since it was just such a bad summer for them last year. We used the carpet powder (we found an all natural one at a pet store) and sprinkled it on and vacuumed it up. We did it twice about 3 weeks apart and it solved the problem. Plus, we vacuumed several times in between and made sure to dump the dirt in the outside dumpster every time. If the bites are all close together or under clothing, it's probably not mosquitos.

My kids were allergic to the mosquito bites. They would get very red and hard where the bugs bit. So I put vitamin b as a daily pill and used the Avon Skin So Soft oil or lotion. There is also a plant that repels them. Maybe someone knows which one it is but I can't recall. There also is a plant that eats bugs....it could be very interesting. It's like a Venus Flytrap, but a much smaller type. Good Luck.

I agree with a previous poster; it could be fleas, bird mites, or even worse, bed bugs. Sometimes you can get them even if you are very clean, etc. It just seems too early for mosquitoes. You can see fleas (they jump and are distinctive in that). The bird mites are black and very teeny-tiny (the size of a pin head full grown). Babies are smaller and white. They are slow moving and distinctive in that. Bedbugs start the size of a pin head, white I think, and get quite a bit larger (grain of rice but fatter). You can tell if you have them by looking at the edges of the mattress, under the mattress, etc. for blood smears, their poop, and their cast off skins. Fleas can be hard to get rid of but not at all impossible. Bird mites are pesky but will die within three weeks if there is no bird blood, though they will bite humans.

You may think these can't be your problem if he is the only one getting bitten, but that is not uncommon, either. Bed bugs are the worst because they are very hard to get rid of. They take 18 months to die with no blood. Do some research, and good luck!

We start taking vitamin B6 and garlic tablets. That changes our body chemistry enough that we are no longer considered "mosquito candy"!

I have to agree with the others that said it doesn't sound like mosquitos...If he's only waking up with them (and not going to bed with them) I would check into other bug sources right away!

We've actually had this problem before and it seems they were coming from our yard. We tried spreading a bag of Sevin or Seven (can't remember the spelling) over the yard and especially around he house and it fixed the problem!
I'm sure if you checked at your local lawn and garden store they would carry it and/or help you find it. I have dogs and they had no problem with it. I think I also might have bought it at Sam's Club. Good luck!

Hi K.,
All of the previous suggestions are excellent. If you're looking for a long term effectiveness that doesn't involve sprays or lotions, I would suggest looking into a bat house. I know it sounds incredbily crazy, but as someone who recently had to get rid of bats in her attic, they really kept the mosquito population non-existent. I haven't done any research as to how to go about creating one, but I do know that there weren't any mosquitos around for miles when we had our problem & the bats never bothered us. It was the most effective way to clear out all of the mosquitos in the area. My husband and I are truly looking into having one built so our neighborhood will be safe again....at least from mosquitos.

As another solution, one of my neighbors actually contacted the city council and requested more spraying be done in the area. We have a truck that comes around and sprays the neighborhood with bug repellent and that seems to help a little too.

I wish you luck! We're battling the problem in our area too.

When you see one person being bitten while others around him are not, my first thought is to make sure he gets pro-biotics (such as the Acidophilus, Lactobacillusc and Bifidobacterium. Yogurt is a good source, but it's important to use whole-milk, organic yogurt that is not flavored. You can mix it with fruit and honey or stir it into his favorite fruit juice and let him drink it. You can also purchase pro-biotics in capsule form and mix it with something like peanut butter or applesause.

We need these natural bacterium to line our intestines. They not only help us digest foods so that we get the nutrition out of what we eat, they also actually create some of the nutrients we need. They create much of our B vitamins. The reason mosquitoes avoid beer drinkers is because of the brewers' yeast in it that is high in B vitamins.

The normal bacterial lining of our intestines can be disturbed by things like antibiotics, vaccines, alcohol, etc. (Not that I think your 4 y/o is drinking alcohol. Some meds have an alcohol base.) When this lining is disturbed, yeasts, such as Candida, can take over and it is difficult for the normal lining to re-establish itself. I work with a number of children and have found that kids with these issues also have issues with mosquitoes.

Although you can also give him a B vitamin supplement, most kids' vitamin supplements are not a very good quality. Even if you give him a good B vitamin supplement, if he is lacking in B vitamins, there is a good chance he is also lacking in pro-biotics. Taking the B vitamin will not give him pro-biotics, but giving him pro-biotics will eventually provide him with most essential B vitamins. It is best to make sure he gets foods that are high in B vitamins, such as meats, dairy, sweet potatoes, etc. Some studies indicate that artificial B vitamin supplements can actually mess up the body's ability to absorb B vitamins. So, the very supplements we take to increase our B vitamins may be what is causing a B vitamin deficiency.

If you feel there is a yeast broblem in the intestines, it can sometimes be turned around by taking pro-biotics twice a day and abstaining from wheat, yeast, and sugar. At your son's age, you might be able to re-establish a healthy intestinal environment in just a few weeks.

If doing this helps him avoid mosquito bites, you can be sure it has helped him to also avoid many health problems as well. You may want to thank those mosquitoes for making you more aware.

I take a B vitamin daily, I was told when we lived in Louisiana that this would help. I have hardly been bitten since, my son gets covered with bites I can't ever convince him to take vitamins.
I would suggest maybe treating his bedding with the skin so soft or the vanilla (this is one I haven't heard of), since that's when he gets bit.
I have also heard about the bats (I'd be too afraid of rabies for that solution) and I've also heard of Martin's (birds) help keep the mosquito population down, so a Martin house might help.
