More Cushioned Mattress?

My one year old son has slept with a blanket since he was born. He use to be so good about letting us cover him up when he goes to bed. For about the past month he will sit up until we walk out of the room then lay down after we walk out. He gets on top of his blanket now and goes to sleep. Every night we have to go in and pull the blanket out from under him so that we can cover him up. Is he doing this just to cuddle with his blanket or is he needing something with more cushion to sleep on? If he is really tired he will sometimes pull a blanket off of our couch and onto the floor so that he can lay on top of it.

What can I do next?

My son is just over 2 years old and has always kicked his blankets off. Even if he goes to sleep with it over him, he will kick it off in his sleep. I just cover him up before bed if his feet feel cold or leave him alone if not. As long as he is dressed appropriately for the temp in the house, don't worry about it! Even my 7 year old usually ends up with out covers by morning.

Maybe thats just the way he likes it. I would put him in warm pajamas and forget the blanket any way, I am always afraid of blankets and pillows in the crib until at least 2 years of age... but if he gets cold he will cover up he just might not want it on him.

infant matresses are supposed to be firm. so the baby can't smother and the more blankets and other items in the crib the higher the risk of SIDS or smothering risk as well.

My kids both do this. Mostly sleeping with a blanket bunched up underneath them or "hugging" the blanket. I think it is more of a comfort and body positioning thing. I have the same preference really, however I sleep with extra pillows. Typically keep one small one between my knees and hug one. It's more comfortable on my back. I assume the same for my kids. If you are concerned about them getting cold without a blanket over top try sleepers. My kids have been sleeping without blankets on top of them since they were able enough to kick the covers off - LOL. So in the winter months, I just make sure to sleep them in zip-up footed fleece sleepers so I know they are warm enough. If you do not have a child sized pillow for your son yet, you might also try that.

It sounds like you are saying he sleeps on the floor. Does he have a mattress? If not, maybe that's why he is laying on the couch's blanket. Maybe he'd rather be cold on top than uncomfortable underneath.

My son, who is also one year old, has also been pulling a blanket off of the couch and laying on top of it. He sleeps with a very thin blanket - more for comfort than for warmth. I suggest dressing him in warmer clothes at night, if you're afraid he's going to get cold and let him use the blanket however he chooses. I don't think he needs a cushioned mattress. I think he just likes cuddling with the blanket. Maybe if you give him a lovey or a small stuffed animal to sleep with and hug on, he might go back to using the blanket as a true blanket. Good luck!

You never really know about little ones and their blankets. I would just get a second blanket to cover him with after her lays on top of the first one. That way you don't have to wrestle the other one out from under him. Maybe his blankets smell good or something. You just never know.

My son is almost 15 months and he has a 2 very special blankets that he has been sleeping with since he was 6 months old, both were crocheted by family members, they have the little holes in them. He loves them, i think because he likes to put his fingers and toes in the holes. Anyway, he does not go anywhere without one of these blankets, it goes to daycare & grandma's house. The fact that we have two is nice b/c we can switch them out when they need to be washed. He will pull his blanket off the couch and lay on top of it or just carry it around, it's just a comfort, snuggle thing. Because they move around so much when they sleep and you find them in all types of positions, i would suggest just covering him with another blanket, we do this all the time. Dress him warm and he will be okay.

I think it is a security blanket now. Just take him shopping to get an on top blanket and call it that. Let's go to the store so you can have an on top blanket! Mommy will put this one on you after we kiss! Not a big deal and try not to make it one. If he sleeps on top of this one also then just buy a third that you keep aside until he is asleep then cover him up.

Hi J.,
I take care of my 18 month nephew and he does the very same thing. He does it to cuddle, since he does the same thing when I give him his teddy. He hugs the teddy/blanket and rolls over it on his belly and goes to sleep. I think its just a comfort to him. Take care.

My kids all did the same thing. I think it's just a comforting thing to them. I always put mine in a onesie and then regular PJ's on top, or a zip up blanket sleeper during the winter.
