We got a new baby in the family, our little 12 week old weiner doggie :) Is anyone familiar with them? He gets along great with my husband, i and teen daughters. He likes to bite and growl at my 9 and 7 year old. I have a feeling it is because they are showing him that they are afraid. I work four hours a day and crate him about 3 of those hours. (my older kids come home and take him out) Is this ok? My last question is, when can you let them roam on thier own? We are constantly taking pieces of carpet and things out of his mouth and making sure that he doesnt get into trouble. Thank you for you help. I am apparently a weiner doggie fan and would love to raise him happy and healthy :)

What can I do next?

QueenoftheCastle said it all.....they're truly not for little kids! Good with teens, great with adults.

Every single mini doxie I've known has been personality +. They're hard-headed, phenomenally stubborn, exceptionally intelligent....but all that brain power is lost when they want something.

My sister's mini dox comes in my front door, pees on whatever he sees first, & then jumps onto my antique chair & tries to jump behind the fireplace fence....all in an attempt to find my dogs' toys! He is absolutely psychotic when it comes to toys & destroys whatever he can get his teeth on.

He is hormonal, he attempts to be dominate over my 2 80lb dogs. He owns an entire wardrobe & loves dressing up. He has his own life jacket & whines nonstop if he isn't put on the jet ski when it leaves the dock! He barks nonstop at the fish in the lake, in the cage, & when he sees a fishing pole! When we're driving down the street, he barks aggressively at everything he sees.....& yet, he's the first one in the truck! Loves to travel!

I have to say....I truly believe my 2 80lb dogs are much easier to live with than he is! Oh, & as for the roaming on their own....at night, 1 year or older - if you ever reach that milestone! & it seems that they do much better when partnered with another dog....otherwise they destroy everything in sight. Good Luck....

Weiner dogs are NOT very good kid pets, but they can be safe if your kids are taught to be very gentle, quiet, and not too playful with him.

They can be VERY fierce--they were bred to go down into holes and chase out badgers.

Another thing--because of their long backs, they are very prone to back problems. Don't let your kids make him stand on his hind legs or try to make him jump too much. We learned that lesson the hard way and ours had to be put to sleep far too young.

Love dachsunds! I grew up with them and never had problems. My brother has a mini that is as sweet as can be. Like any dog, it all depends on how it is raised.
With our yorkie pup, we taught him No Bite!! if he started chewing on fingers or snapping at people. We taught him "kisses" when he would lick us and would say good boy. So now if he nibbles, even gently we say, No bite!! Kisses!! He will stop and start licking. The kids even do it.(5 and 8) Make sure he has quality chew toys, not the cheap junk.
I Googled crate training a pup and found some great advice! I think at his age, he needs to go out every 3 hours, as well as after playing and after meals.
Enjoy your puppy!

I have a giant long-haired dachsund. He is great with kids of any age, but I think that's because he's pretty big. Little dogs generally are afraid of kids because they don't want to be hurt by them. Kids can be scary and rough! I also have a chihuahua (17-years-old!) and she is also good with everybody but stays very far away when little kids are around. She's been stepped on a few times I think, so she's afraid of them.

You and your kids all need to take the dog to training. That's the only way this will work out. So many people have problems with their dogs that could be easily corrected by taking a training class. Go to your local pet store and see if they offer classes, or google dog training in your area. Good trainers will help all of you learn to get along with the new doggie, and will help the dog realize who is boss and who is the dog.

About the roaming free thing.... my dog is 7 and he still finds things to chew -- like shoes, purses, pillows. Some dogs never grow out of that.

I would be very careful...as Queen of the castle said, Weiner dogs are not good with kids. Weiner dogs are the most likely breed of dog to bite. In our neighboorhood there is a couple that has 2 super cute little weiner dogs, & they have bitten 2 kids.

My in-laws have had 2 mini's for 13 years. They didn't like my kids when they were real little but they're good now. They were fine to be out of the crate and run around the house.

I would be pretty concerned about a puppy at this age growling and trying to bite at anyone. He might be doing it out of fear but that does not make it okay. Or he may be trying to assert dominance over them. Puppies are supposed to be friendly and outgoing to everyone. I would sign him up for puppy obedience classes pronto and make sure everyone attends so everyone is on the same page as far as how they are to behave and interact with the puppy, especially as he grows up into an adult dog.

Also, getting a crate at this point and crating him whenever you can't supervise him will help with the house training and help keep him from eating and chewing everything he can get his teeth on. Every dog is different and there are some dogs that you can almost never leave alone in the house because of what they decide to get into.

We have a mini dach, and she's great. She's 11, and I don't know what she was like as a puppy (I wasn't in the picture until she was 5), but we always crate her when when we aren't home. If we don't, she has accidents. She likes our kiddo, but she's jealous so she'll go to the bathroom in her room if we aren't looking. She also barks and/or growls if we hug or play excessively, she thinks someone is getting hurt.

That's not to say they're bad dogs, but they are easily excited. And they're small, so kenneling really sets them up for success, unless you have a doggie door, so they can go outside.
