Mail Forwarding... Does It Work on Packages?

I moved about two months ago. Stayed in the same city, just on the other side. I did the whole address change thing with the USPS, and haven't had any trouble getting my mail.

Then my grandma called to ask if had received my Christmas package that she mailed a week ago. ...no, I haven't. THEN she told me that she had sent it to my FIL's house (we had been living with them, but when the lease ended on that house we moved into our own place, and my SIL is staying with us so she can go to school here if FIL's job moves him out of state again... So they didn't need a big place any more and moved too) Even though I had made a point of making sure she had our new address. She says she sent it through USPS, so I'm hoping that it will automatically redirect to us... And that it is just taking a little longer than usual...

So... Do you know if packages are redirected like normal mail? I would like to know before I start trying to track down a way to get in touch with the new tenants (if there are any yet...) if I have to. (I don't have transportation to check in person, or I would just drive there and ask, maybe leave my # in case it does show up...) Should I have my grandma call the post office and try to track it?

What can I do next?

It is the season for packages to take a little longer than expected. I would call the post office and see if it is there. I know that some companies will not have packages forward, they get shipped back to the company and then the company will call to get the correct address. They do this so the merchandise does not get stolen. They should be forwarding a private package.

It isn't an automatic thing with packages--so most likely it will be redirected to you but it will take longer. I would start tracking it now----Yes, you should have gma track it. Especially during this time of year--packages get lost/stolen and you want to find out asap. GL

Really depends on your carrier, but in my experience, no. They hold the packages at your old post office until you come for them.
I'd call.
I'm not sure how your local post office is, but in Chicago, it's TERRIBLE.

If it went through the post office, it should forward to you. There may be a little bit of a delay with the holidays. You can always call your post office to double check in the morning.
