Hi - We recently had to put our much beloved lab down. It has been a very difficult time. We decided that we are a dog family and need to get a new dog (preferably puppy.) I have heard wonderful things about standard poodles and was wondering if any of you have any information about the breed. We would also like the names/numbers of some local breeders. There is a parent in our school who breeds labradoodles (lab and poodle). They are quite cute and gentle. Email if interested in contact info.

Hi there! I've had a toy poodle in the family for years, very smart and friendly, good with my younger kids. The best part is that they don't shed!!
I am a professional dog trainer and I have a few clients who have very lovely Poodles. However, I urge you to follow the first advice first - look at shelters and rescue groups first. See, for example, NorCal Poodle Rescue at http://www.norcalpoodlerescue.net/.
Also remember that Poodles are large, high-energy sporting breed dogs. If your children are quite young, you might want to avoid a baby puppy and get an older pup who is already past the stages of play-biting, chewing, and housetraining!

If you're intent on finding a purebred, try to find a rescue organization. There are so many dogs that need homes these days the best thing to do is to adopt one from a shelter.
