My very elderly Grandparents just told me yesterday that they had several old 8mm film reels. I am in desperate need of a projector to play them on now. Does anyone know where to (or even if it's possible) to rent an 8mm film projector? If not rent then where would I buy one at? My Grandpa also mentioned he would like to find someone to transfer the 8mm film onto something newer. Any idea of where I would go to have that done and how much that would cost?? I have done a search on the internet but didn't really come up with anything so any help with this is VERY much appreciated!!!

What can I do next?

I wanted to let you know that Walgreen's can transfer the 8mm onto either VHS and I believe DVD. My mom had some from her childhood put on to VHS there, so I know they can do VHS for sure!! Good Luck!! You also might check on craigslist for a projector.

Don't mess with a projector, goto http://www.gotmemories.com $4.99 to transfer a 50ft reel to a DVD, and the quality is fantastic.

I have a couple sitting in the garage you can have. I do not have instructions - but those can be found on the internet once you have the model number.

I can tell you that transfering of 8 mm to DVD isn't cheap but can be done.

my husband just did a cost check and he found out that Wolf camera seems to be the cheapest place around for conversion to dvd. That way you don't have to worry about your film breaking or scratching and you have the videos for a very long time on modern technology. We have tons of video from his parents wedding and his birth and childhood that are just treasures.

We transfer 8mm film to DVD for $10 a reel at B. Cloud V. http://www.bluecloudvideo.
Buying a projector and playing your film is risky. You could burn your film, scratch it, break it, and rip the sprockets to shreds. Once the sprockets are gone, you can't transfer it very easily if at all. Be careful.

I just had a similar conversation with my father in law last night and he took the 8mm film to Wolfs to have transferred to DVD. I believe the cost was about $10 per reel.
