JFF- Do You Still Own a VCR?

Updated on May 18, 2014

My husband and I were discussing the other day. My MIL gave our kids a couple of Scooby Doo VHS tapes to bring home with them after a visit. They were SO excited, and pulled them out of their bags with anticipation to watch with us. We just laughed. We haven't owned a VCR in several years!
We ended up having to rent them on streaming since they were so disappointed. We had to let our MIL know not to buy any more VHS for them to bring home. She couldn't believe we didn't own a VCR. We couldn't believe she did!
Do you still have your VCR? If not, what did you do with the tapes?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Interesting responses! Remember those tape rewinders you could buy for your VHS tapes? What a luxury THAT was!
Other than Disney Blu-Ray releases, I don't even buy DVDs much anymore. We've gone streaming for just about everything, unless it's something we really, really like. It's the same thing with music CDs. I can't remember the last time I bought a CD- years maybe? My husband does buy Godzilla DVDs from time to time.- lol.
My brother converted all home videos to DVD format a couple of years ago. Other than a very sentimental 60th Anniversary VHS copy of Gone with the Wind, we don't have any more VHS tapes. Well, unless you count 1 Scooby Doo movie (my 3 yo decided to pull tape out of the other movie).

Yes, we actually have 2 DVD/VHS combo units and probably always will. I have inherited a collection of Disney movies and other kid stuff from and for the daycare, so we always have a VCR to watch them on.

We still have a VCR. How else would we watch our old kung fu movie collection? :)

We also still have a beta player in the basement. Please know, that says more about my husband than it does about me! He's got a box of tapes too, they are 'valuable'. Hmmm....

(oh and we have the tape rewinder too!)

Our entertainment system consists of a teensy (16") television (with integrated VCR which we no longer use) and an added disc player, and a cheap subscription to Netflix. We set this up near the couch so the screen looks bigger, and trade foot rubs during the movies.

I'm telling you, even for those of us on too-small-for-technology budgets, this is truly being in the Lap of Luxury!!!

I think we do, in the recesses of our teen's room. He hooked it up to a projector to show a Disney movie on the wall to a friend's young child we were baby sitting... I don't know if it still works anymore. But I'm pretty sure it is still in his room.

The tapes? They are on a bookshelf collecting dust.

We have one in a closet somewhere - we have a few tapes - mostly Disney movies.
I'm sure it's right next to a turn table (you know, for records - we have a few boxes of those, too).
We haven't used either in ages.
My husband inherited a Victrola a few years ago (along with some incredibly thick records).
Guess we've got a few things that will be fit or a museum someday.

Yes, we do (posting from the fuddy-duddy Luddite zone). Our player is a combination VCR-DVD, and we still use the VCR portion often to record soccer games and shows/movies on TV. We also have quite a few VHS tapes. If that player ever breaks, it will be a sad day because I'm sure no store in town sells them and I doubt we could even find someone who knows how to fix it.

We have it in the basement attached to the big tube-in-the-back TV. We still haven't converted all those mini-tapes from our kids' childhood onto DVDs or flashdrives - maybe we should bring it upstairs to watch the tapes and stroll down memory lane... (get a box of tissues!) Mabye with one away at college I'll find time to tackle that project...

We still have a handful of VHS tapes and we still have a portable video player from our loooong roadtrip when the kids were 2-almost-3 & 5-almost-6. My husband and I must have turned to eachother about 25 times that trip saying the $400 we spent on that videop player was the best investment we had ever made. That was Spring 2002.

We have two! One is on a TV that is not hooked to cable or satellite or anything simply for watching either DVD or VHS (dual DVD and VHS). We also have a VCR hooked to our TV that is connected to DISH. I can't believe that people pay for the Hopper, DVRs, etc these days. No wonder so many people have such huge cable bills! Mine is $29.99 per month plus the taxes. I tape anything I want from the DISH satellite TV and then we can watch it on either TV.

I don't own a DVR - but I do borrow VHS movies from the public libraries and of course I tape whatever - movies, shows, etc. I truly believe that streaming and DVRs are a downgrade in technology - all they did was contribute to everyone's having another subscription service.

BTW, we don't stream anything. We don't have good enough internet service for that nor do we own a TV or device that could do it. TV is from 1998 and still works perfectly. No need to buy this fancy stuff.

Cheers,
C. - who might sound old but is only 42.

I had my VCR until both my kids started school. I had lots and lots of kids/Disney movies on VHS that I had picked up for next to nothing at yard sales and Goodwill, so the VCR was for them. That was before Netflix. My youngest is in grade three, so I got rid of the VCR about 3 or 4 years ago.

We do still have a VCR. It is a combo VCR and DVD burner. We've been meaning to use it to transfer all of our home videos to DVD. Of course we haven't had a chance to. We don't have as many VHS as we had back in the day. We've been purging them recently and donated a bunch to Friends of the Library. They either put them into circulation as rentals or sell them to raise money for the public library. It is a tax deductible donation for us too which is a plus. We still have some more boxes of VHS to sort through, we're keeping a few of them still. Home made videos like things you taped off the TV or whatever you can crack open. The tape itself is trash but the plastic case can be recycled with your normal recycling.

Actually, my parents have a large collection of Disney VHS tapes and an old TV with a built-in VCR in the guest room. My kids discovered both on our visit there last summer and were INTRIGUED by the tapes! They kept trying to open the actual tapes to find the disc inside....They also found the whole rewind/fast forward concept endlessly amusing. Pocahontas was looking a little scratchy, I gotta say!

We own two of them.

My mom has a machine that you can put a VHS tape into on one side, and then put a DVD on the other side, and transfer what's on the VHS tape to the DVD. You then finalize the DVD, take it out, write on the DVD what it is, and voila, you can throw your VHS tape away if you want.

We do still have a TV that is in good working order, not used much and it has the built in VCR.

I have most of the VCR tapes boxed up and stored in a closet.

I think the last time this TV was used was when daughter stayed over at our house a couple months ago AFTER she had moved into her condo and took most everything from my upstairs... She watched some movie for the heck of it because we didn't have the tv set up on cable in that room.

Right now we use mostly the DVR and some DVD's

I have a stand alone VHS player that a lady gave me at work years ago. It's not hooked up. I also have a TV with a built in VHS and DVD player that's in the guest room. I got that TV in college back in 2002. I used to record my soap every afternoon while I was in class! I have given away the vast majority of my VHS tapes, since I have most of the Disney movies on DVD now. Pretty much the only ones I've kept are the ones that I don't have a DVD copy of.

Yes, we have two working VCRs although they don't get used very often. Mostly for recording certain broadcasts for Trivia purposes (an annual contest that is a big deal locally) or when my husband converts home videos to DVD for people.

I wonder if we still have kids show VHS in the basement somewhere...10 years ago we had quite a lot of preschool-age tapes.

My husband also have a laser disc player for the novelty and a smaller tape player for video converions. Betamax, I think.

We actually do own one, but we don't have it hooked up at the moment. We got it while stationed overseas and in addition to being a VCR it works as a decoder so that it can decode cable and films made for different European counties. We have held onto it because it was pricey to get the decoder and we hope to return to Europe for a few more years before we settle down in one place. It is also nice to have so we can hook it up from time to time and watch old home movies, but we have talked about getting those transferred to DVD soon.
