Looking for Advice on a New Digital Camera

We currently have a Canon Powershot SD200 and loved it. It is about 5 years old and just started doing some funky things with my outdoor pictures. I've tried all their support advice and nothing has worked so I think we are off to buy a new digital camera. I loved our Canon but can anyone suggest a great digital camera that they have and love? Looking for something on the smaller side, easy to use, easy to download pictures, rechargeable battery and takes overall good quality pictures. I am not looking for all the fancy bells and whistles. If you have any good suggestions please send them my way.

Thanks!

My daughter just bought her second Nikon Cool Pix 10 MP, from Best Buy, and it takes incredible pictures. Plus, the one feature that she really wanted was a touch screen (you can get it with our without) and it allows you to adjust your picture quality with it (just watch the "Nikon/Ashton Kutcher Commercial" where he signs the picture using the touchscreen - that's how she knew about this feature - kinda funny!) . Without the touch screen, it's very reasonable at $149.00. My last camera was a Canon and I'm definitely more of a fan of Nikon's and Sony's.

However, my daughter's friend has a brand new Samsung digital (slender design) from Best Buy too. I'm amazed at the fast action pictures that she captured - people in mid-air jumpiing in a pool. Very cool at an impressive price! I am not able to do that with my own 3 year old Sony Cyber-shot, because there is a brief delay between shooting and processing. It takes wonderful pictures but I have to anticipate the moment before it happens, for a sport's shot and that's getting old.

So if you are going to take a lot of action shots (i.e. kids jumping in a pool, playing baseball, etc...) you want to look for a camera with a fast processing speed.

I totally love my Olympus Stylus 1010! It's very compact but has a great 7x optical zoom lens. It has a rechargeable battery and takes great photos and video with sound. The quality of the pictures are amazing, I like the "scene selection" option where the camera automatically adjusts to what you're taking...whether it be outdoor, indoor, at night, fireworks, sports, behind glass, even has a setting for taking pictures of things to sell! We took it to Disney and got some great shots...even of the stage productions where it was dark and we were sitting pretty far away. The picture is clear as if she were right in front of us!

The only downside is it only uses Olympic brand cards that come in 2 gig. The cards run about $20 at Walmart, or less online. They do hold A LOT. I have two and have barely ever needed to pop in the second one. I have a mac, and downloading the pics is a snap.

Hope that helps!

Hi Jennifer,

We had the same thing. Our old Canon lasted about 4 years and then we just replaced it two months ago. We ended up just getting another Canon. One of the biggest reasons you may want to consider is we already had the charger, memory cards, battery, and case for a Canon. The new camera takes the old battery and charger and memory cards. This way we always have a backup battery already charged and we didn't have to spend money on new sd cards. This is a really great benefit and I feel it gives our old camera a "new life". We bought the Canon Power Shot D960 Elph and I love it even more than my old Canon. It takes great pics, is light and small, and very simple to use. Not three million fancy buttons, I'll never learn to use! The auto option is perfect and it selects the right adjustment for each picture automatically so you don't have to change settings. Take your old battery with so you can make sure it fits with a new one. We had considered a Sony because of the "smile finder", but would have also had to purchase separate memory cards and other accesories and didn't think it was worth it. Good luck.
