Hello Moms,
We are about to leave on our first vacation in 5 years tomorrow and silly me is now deciding we need a better camera! I am wanting to purchase it at Wal-mart as I hear they will match sale prices. My question is what camera to get? Here is what I want to have- photo and video with sound, Zoom but no specifics and smaller style, quick snapping (the one we have now takes about 10seconds to snap the picture, by then the kids are in the other room!).
Thanks so much for any help!!!

So What Happened?

Bonnie, so far you're my only responder but I googled the Canon Powershot and am really loving what I see, not to mention it is very well priced vs. all the others I have been researching. I think this will be the one I get! Thanks so much, you made my search so much easier and it helps to hear from someone who has/loves the product too! Cheers!

Cannon powershots are always a great choice. We have three of them.

We got the Kodak, I think it Easy Share and we love it. It's small and does all kinds of nifty stuff. We don't even take our video camera around with us since this thing will take short video (not sure how long, but we've never had a problem) and it does have sound. We got it at Wal-Mart. Good luck and have fun!!!

I didn't see your post until this morning, so this may be too late. My cousin is a professional photographer, and I had recently asked him nearly the same question. His response was to go with a Canon, so it sounds like you're on the right track! Have a great time.

Everyone in my family has a Kodak EasyShare camera. This includes my 11 and 12 year old daughters. They are easy to use and upload to the computer. Do purchase a 4GB or 8GB card for your new camera. They will hold up to 2000 pictures and you won't have to change out cards or upload them if you are not bringing your computer. Also, the EasyShare camera can be charged by plugging it into the wall and/or computer. Good luck and God Bless and Have fun!

I ended up going with the Kodak Easyshare because I didn't like the fact that the Canon's required the regular AA batteries... They don't last long on the digital cameras and the lithium ones are expensive and on vacation you just don't have time to keep charging and changing batteries. The other camera I looked at at Walmart 3 mos ago when I bought was the Sony...but basically anything that DIDN'T require additional batteries...I just wanted to plug it into a wall and be done with it.

I went for the 9mp because the difference in the picture quality was minimal compared to the 10mp. Also, don't waste your time on the Olympus waterproof one, I've heard the waterproof is nice but the pictures aren't that great.

My Easyshare is easy peasy to select the settings (idiot proof for those of us who didn't understand right lighting/flashes for candlelight, backlight, snow, bright sun, etc.) Even had video on it that I used to tape my daughter's dance recital! Extremely easy and helpful. Here is the youtube link if you want to see the quality of the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejPg33aLzzw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqarcbDy4Xg. Good luck and have a great vacation!

I have a Canon Sure shot now and it takes clear photos and great video. It's also very user friendly and works easily with the computer. I think it was about $100-150 a few years ago. Be sure to buy a memory card with at least 2 GB so you won't fill it up quickly while on vacation. Pictures won't take up much space, but if you shoot a lot of video, you'll want more GBs. Have fun!

I have had two SONY digital cameras (upgraded mine and gave the old one to my husband), and loved them both. Excellent photos and videos too.

Name brand's are always good, so if you can afford one of them, stick to it. In no order - Canon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, Nikon....

Also - When looking at the zoom feature, look for a higher optical zoom as if you ever want to enlarge a photo you take it will enlarge better and not look so grainey. I personally won't buy anything uner a 10x optical.

I have a cannon SD1100 that I got last Christmas and I LOVE it. It does have a tendency to white out the sky which is unfortunately common in the small point and shoots, but it's the size of a deck of cards and the colors generally come out great. It has image stabilization so my pics are always crystal clear unless shoot in macro which can be tricky. It has some great in camera features and excellent zoom capabilities as well as video. The flash is a bit weak, again, common in the little cameras. An external flash can be purchased in addition. The camera is under $200 however I would highly recomend getting it at best buy with an extended warrenty. There is a lense error that many people have experienced with all cannons that completely disables the camera. A warrenty would cover you for that. (I haven't had any problems with mind and I did TONS of research before deciding on this model for it's features and photo quality.) Good luck and enjoy your trip!

stay away from the 80.00 10 MP vivitar digital camera. We bought that one and took it back because of it's low quality of pics. I have 7 MP cameras that do better than that one.
We have a Samsung BL103 10.2 MP that does a great job and also has video on it but I don't think they sell that one at wal-mart anymore. It was one of the special Thanksgiving sales. It is probably around 120.00 range if you do find one somewhere.

Oh and I do look for cameras that take AA batteries because you can get them anywhere. I spent over 300.00 on a camera that had a battery pack and hate that camera, it only took around 20 pics and was dead then had to recharge it before I could use it and if it was off the charger for a few days it would be dead when I needed it so basically that one has to be on the charger all the time until you are ready to use it. I absolutely hate that camera and bought a cheaper 100.00 one. I like the cheaper one a lot better that takes AA's. You can buy the rechargable AA's and alternate them out. We get more than 20 pics out of the batteries on this Samsung. My daughter is always taking pics so not sure how many she gets on one set of batteries but she takes 100's of pics a week and I don't see batteries getting charged all the time although I did buy several rechargables for our vacation and has a charger that you can plug into your laptop usb port. We only charged batteries once on our vacation.
