I have a 3 almost 4 year old boy that is delayed with his speech. he does not communicate very well with me-or anyone else! he will say words very often but does not try to communicate what his needs or wants are, I am very confused and torn. his dr. reccommended seeing a psychiatrist since he thinks he may be slightly autistic but i am having a very hard time finding one-especially one that takes blue cross ins!! anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

What can I do next?

I will recomend to find a devolpment pediatrician, I've heard very good thing about Dr. Patricia Harkins 692 34 39. You can call them and check about insurance, she also is very busy so you may call asap to make an appointment. Also you can check with Any baby can of san antonio http://www.anybabycansa.org/autism.htm, they may help you to find someone who accepts your insurance. I will highly recomend to start with speech therapy, so you can call your school district and they have to give him therapy for free. Don't feel guilty about it it's not your fault. You are doing good trying to find help. But don't wait, early intervention is the key. My daughter had an autism diagnosis and after lots of therapies, change in her diet and supplements, she is doing very well now. If you have questions you can email me ____@____.com

Your not alone, my son just turned four. I noticed early on that he was diffrent from other kids around age 2 and a half. Luckily there is hope. Children that are 2 can have Easter Seals come to your house and work with. However since he has turned three, I would stronly recommend to call you local school district and ask what schools offer a class for speach delay. In our area ( Alamo Heights) Howard learning center offers a very good program and from what I understand it is offered in every school district. You can prolly call Howard and ask for the register, explain your situation and find a school that has that program. (Howard ###-###-####). What happens is your kiddo goes to meet with, and after a few observations it is determined weather child needs services. The good news is that it is a free program given by school district. Morgan started showing a great improvment after two months. Normally Morgan is picked up by bus, goes in from 8-11am. Also if you think son might be autistic, would suggest seeing a developmental pedie' doc. Dr.Harkins ###-###-####)(there is another one Dr Fierro, but do not have his number,if you need I will look it up)specialises in children with autism. The sooner you get things rolling the beter, so the transition into school is smoother. If your son is diagnosed with this, it is good to know so that school with provide proper visual aids and learning tools to help him to better learn. Also Dr Rotienberg ( ###-###-####)is a wonderful Nero doctor, our youngest has a seizure disorder and may also be autist. ( we are going to New Bronfels to do testing). About the physologist dunno we have not done that, our insurance does not cover that. Please if you have any questions feel free to email me.

Hi M.. I'm sorry you are having difficulties. I have never used a child psychologist, but my dad is a psychologist and he has an old friend (they got their PhDs together) who is a child psych. My mom used to own a daycare center and she recommended several families to him (including some with autistic children) and they were all very satisfied with him. His name is Dr. Johnny Clay Johnson. I don't know anything about what insurance he takes. I also don't know his phone number, but I'm sure you can look him up in the phone book. If you have trouble finding his number, send me a personal message and I'll try to find it for you.
Hope this helps.

M.,

I was somewhat confused on your need. In the subject you state that you need a child psycologist but in the body of your paragraph you state psychiatrist. I know some very good child pscyhologist & psychiatrist but I would need to know which you need. The primary difference is that a psychiatrist can prescribe medication while a psychologist can't. The psychologist does more testing/level of functioning. You can e-mail me directly: ____@____.com

I don't know about any psychaitrist but my son is/was speech delayed. My advice to you is to go get his ears check (ENT) just to be sure these is no hearing problems, then I would check into the school he would be going to. My son started school when he was about four y/o. He went to speech theraphy for a while before going to school. He is doing okay in school now. He has a trouble keeping up with the rest of the students. You can also try Easter Seals. If you are having trouble find a doctor that takes your insurance you should ask his primary doctor for resources. If your is too busy he is doing you a disservice!! Whenever my doctor tells me to go to another doctor he gives me a list of doctors that take that insurance.
The sooner you seek help for your little one is best. I know it's overwhelming sometimes to think about it but just know that you are trying the best to make he a better person so give you the encouragement.
Hope this helps.

I would be very interested to see what you find out I have a son who is 4 going to be 5 in May and he too has speech delays. I haven't been able to find anyone who will even attempt to help us until he starts school. This is so frustrating to me because I dont want him to be delayed in school. We are moving to SA in July please let me know what you find. We also have BCBS ins. Thanks CINDY
