Kindle or Nook? - Minneapolis,MN

We use ours primarily for reading and games. You can watch online tv on them, but we have only used this feature once while we were on a long layover at the airport and trying to entertain the kids. I use a few apps on mine...I am a big fan of a check list app to keep me organized. And we use a few apps to make letter, writing and reading practice a little different for our kids. And we use them for quick internet searches.

We have both and here's what I said:
I have a Nook Color and my hubby has a Kindle Fire. Here's what we have noticed. Neither one is fantastic on the web, but the Kindle Fire appears to be just a touch faster and slightly easier to navigate.

The Nook seems to us, to be just a bit better to read on, especially if you are out in the sun. And we often read outside while watching our kids play.

The Kindle is a bit more proprietary. You have to go to amazon.com, for most of the books. Since we have an Amazon prime membership, it's no big deal. Because we can get one free book a month, plus they offer many free books on amazon, it's just a matter of finding something that you are interested in reading. With the Nook, I am able to find more freebies online. It will take PDFs.

The Kindle battery life is shorter than the Nook, but it charges pretty quickly. The Nook has a longer battery life and charges a bit more slowly.

Customer service on both appears to be good. My MIL broke a cable (yanked it really hard) and Amazon was great about getting a new one to her free of charge. But she did have to wait for it. When my Nook cord stopped working, I took it to Barnes and Noble and they replaced it right there.

I can't really recommend one above the other. It all depends on what is important to you. We are pretty happy with both. Maybe I gave you some food for thought.

Kindle Fire - so the kids can also play games and watch shows.

My daughter got a Nook a couple of years ago and we have had nothing but problems with it. It nevers works, never stays connected to wi-fi, customer service has been horrible. We will never buy another one.

I have a Kindle 3G and all 3 of my kids (9, 7, and 5) have their own Kindle Fire's. Those things have saved us big time on our recent road trips. They download games and movies and we have a way to charge them in the car...so they are never without their own device. They also read books on them!

Nook Color is great!
'I have had mine for abut 1 1/2 years and my daughter now 4 1/2 still loves it. THere are some really cute kids apps, reading, counting etc. and there are plenty of stories, some plain (just colorful pictures) some that the Nook will read to you and others enhanced, where it will read the story and then there are story related activites for the kids to do.

I use it to read, to check the weather and my e-mail, and I am addicted to Sudoku puzzles so I do that all the time.

Every Friday they have a free book, and there is one offered at a discount every day as well.

I'm not sure which one but I do have a story about one. My MIL gave my husband her old Nook when she got a new one. I have been against the e-reader thing. I really like to hold the book in my hand. (probably because I am an author :) ) So, one of my favorite authors has put out a few novellas only available in e-reader. Ok....fine, I will use the damn thing. So I get through the Novellas, but apparently the Nook understood that I wasn't a big fan of it. Because it broke. No joke. The whole thing froze up and has these smeary lines all across it. I didn't drop it, step on it, get it wet, nothing. It just broke.

So, the moral of the story is, if you get an e-reader don't think bad thoughts about it. Apparently they are sensitive and vindictive. My husband says I am not allowed to play with his electronics anymore....

I have the Nook, my mom has the Kindle. Both great, both are almost identical. If it's games you are looking at then the Kindle has a better selection...although my 2 year old doesn't know the difference.

I use it for reading mainly and some web surfing. My kids watch movies on it and play games, plus reading. My 2 year old likes the books that are interactive and read to her.

I don't think you can wrong with either of them really.

My daughter (11) has a Nook Color. Great device for her. Screen is larger than a regular Nook or regular Kindle, color is fine, easy to download books (and be aware -- there are free or very low-cost books out there to download!) She also plays some games on it but not a lot. We do not use it for video or TV etc. -- it's a reader, and kids need to read, not be watching videos. I don't use it at all except to approve book downloads.

There was a study published recently that said that if you want a device for your kids to use to read, get a reader like a Nook or Kindle and not a tablet computer. Too many other uses for a tablet and too distracting. Readers are optimized for reading!

I have a Kindle touch, and absolutely love it! I only read books on it, so I can't comment on games and such.

I'm on a e-mail list that sends out a daily e-mail with free books on it... it is "inspiredreads.com" and they are religious books.... Christian fiction, inspirational, and Christian non-fiction. I've got close to 200 books on my Kindle, and I've spent less than $20 ... (I have bought a select few).....

I'm not necessarily looking for the latest books... I just want something quick and easy to read.

Hubby has the Sony E-reader, and gets along with it just fine... it has less on-board memory, but uses micro SD cards, so you can store BUNCHES of books on those cards.

Hubby also found different free programs that will convert one e-reader's books to another e-reader's format..... so you could get books from other sources.

If you have a local library card, you can often d/l books for free, like you would check them out.... limited time, of course, but another source.

There are also different lending libraries... Lendle is one for the Kindle.....
