I thnk santa is bringing me one. do those of you have have one really love it or was it just the cool new thing and now you have gone back to regular books?? I am a constant reader, it is rare that I go a week with out a book. and I am h*** o* books I read while I do dishes and while I brush my teeth, at the pool w ith the kids in the summer etc. so I worry I would break the kindle/nook or ruin it. I also have some trouble with computer screens bothering my eyes, more than reading fine print in a book. I honestly enjoy going to the library and like the feel of real books, but hubs has it in his head that I need this.

so will I love a nook/kindle or not??

I love, love, love my Kindle! My 9 y/o likes mine so well he is getting his own for Christmas so we don't have to fight over it anymore :)
I have the Kindle Touch so no games, just books. Even my 5 y/o will ask me if I have it and if he can look at his books. I carry it with me all the time and read a lot.

I was like you. My husband got me the Kindle the first year it came out, I thought I would hate it. Nope, love it. I have the Kindle app on all of my devices (ipad, iphone, and computer), it syncs the page read across all of them. Love that - if I find myself unexpectedly waiting, I always have my book with me! My mom is the least tech savvy person on the planet. I got her a Kindle last year and she loves it, uses it all the time.

I love my kindle, I actually read more books because it is so easy to find new ones! And I sync it to my android (through the kindle app) so if I forget it anywhere, I still have it with me :D

I have a regular Kindle (not the Fire). I am an avid reader and I love, love, love it. I've been a Kindle owner since the second generation and have had 3 of them total (gave the first one to my mom so I could upgrade, then gave the second to my husband).

I promise, if it's the paperwhite screen, it won't bother your eyes. It's not backlit like a computer. It's like reading regular paper, and it's lovely. Being able to carry your whole library in your purse is WONDERFUL.

I lost my Kindle last week and feel SOOOOOO sad that I can't seem to find it anywhere (I think it might be at my in-law's). My husband thinks I lost it on purpose so I can have the next generation. :-) LOL

ETA: Oh, when I'm in the bathtub or pool, I put my Kindle in a Ziplock bag. :-) I've dropped it a lot and have had no problems.

I love my regular kindle (with paperwhite screen, not the lit up kindle fire). It was cheaper than the fire, and also can be held with one hand since the page forward/backward is with buttons on the sides rather than screen swyping like the fire. The battery also lasts a month or more with daily reading. The only real benefit to the fire is that you can surf the web on it, I've got a laptop to do that on.

I have a kindle fire. In fact am using it to write this lol. I love it for doing email, playing on Facebook, mamasource and googling things. And I do read some books. The thing for me about the books is that they are too me expensive for something you don't get to hold in your hand. There are some free books available but they are for the most part really cheesy didn't and won't ever make it to the best seller list. You can check ebooks out at the library but it's a pain. Just my opinion. But having said that about the book part I love the being able to get online from just about anywhere.

And an FYI. Don't go spend $ big bucks on a cover. I got mine on eBay new for $10 and it includes the stylus and free shipping

I used to have a basic kindle and now have the new Kindle Paperwhite. I like the backlight on the Paperwhite much more than my old one and would definitely recommend it. Both are strictly readers without apps or internet access. I have mixed feelings about them. I LOVE how easy it is to carry around and being able to go on vacation with a dozen books all stored in one small place. Buy a case for it and consider also getting a waterproof bag of some sort for pool and beach excursions. Public libraries are slowly increasing their volume of books to check out, so that's nice too.

What I don't like: it is not easy to go back and re-read something that happened early in the book. You can't just flip through; you have to search and often times it's practically impossible to find again. It's also difficult (though easier with the paperwhite than with my old one) to peek forward and see how far you have until the next chapter or break in the story. If those things don't matter to you, you'll probably have no complaints about reading on a kindle.

I am not a super tech savvy person either. I have an iphone but don't have a tablet and don't feel the need for one at all. I dislike reading long articles on the computer so I was worried that I would feel the same way with the kindle, but I do not at all. It really does feel like reading a book and not like reading on a computer screen. I read it while brushing my teeth too and I've never ruined it.

I have a nook, hubby has a kindle. We both fought the idea for a while...we too are avid readers. I find a book more comforting ( I hope that makes sense) but I love the convenience of the readers. especially when traveling. We are no longer shoving paper bags everywhere! I have no problems reading on them...you can adjust the light to suite you. If you are really h*** o* them, I would suggest investing in an otterbox. Expensive, but may be worth it. I think ours have taken a bit of a beating and are still in great shape, but the otterbox will really protect it.

I have a Kindle and love it. The only thing that stinks is my kids lost my charger...so it was dead for a few months until we found it! But now I'm back at it. I read all the time as well and love how small it is and that it fits nicely in my purse. I have it with me 90% of the time.

I need to look into that app that links everything so it's always with me...I have an iphone and ipad so I think it will work.

I did just get a book from the library a few weeks ago and I loved reading it, but hated fighting with it in bed to keep the pages open.

I have a Nook HD.
It is GREAT and great for reading.
LOVE it.
My kids have one too, from a relative last year.
A Nook HD as well.

And like any tech gadget, you have to get a proper "case" for it, to protect it. And of course, not have it near water.

Per the Nook, you can, with your fingers, make the fonts bigger or smaller. And it is not full of "glare" when you read on it.

I also like reading real books with actual pages.
But I like reading on my Nook HD a lot.
I am currently reading 2 books on it.

And the thing with reading via a "tablet" is... that you can read at night... without having a light on and you don't need a book light either. Because the Nook HD, is self lit.
And you can adjust the brightness of it, as you wish.

My daughter's friend who is an avid reader, recently got a Nook HD too.
And she LOVES it. She is constantly, reading on it.

I have a Nook and it is nice, but I just don't use it. I'd much rather have a real book. I've had mine for 4-5 years. I've read maybe a dozen books on it. I haven't turned in on in at least a year and a half. For me it was a waste of money.

I am not tech savy but I do fine with my Nook Glow light. My husband bought me a regular Nook against my wishes and desires. There was a learning curve but I stuck with it. Within 3 months I loved it. I used it so much but I had issues with lighting. So he bought me the Nook Glowlight. I love it even more. I only use mine for reading books and I can't rave enough about it.

Reading from a non-ereader is awful for me. I get headaches. A tablet was and is not a viable way for me to read. I use computers, cell phones and tablets for surfing and my Nook for reading. I love my Nook but my children are young. Trips to a library or bookstore are difficult at best. I read a lot (several books a week) so I enjoy being able to buy a book at any time day or night and from anywhere with Internet access. It can be expensive, though. I know people buy cheap books but I find I don't enjoy most of them (I think you get what you pay for). Borrowing from my library is tough because of limited selection and difficulty in checking out what I want to.

P.S. I still love regular books but my Nook is much loved for its convenience and ready access for book shopping m

I have an ipad and a kindle.

I like the ipad for reading because it has the back light, so you can read in bed. Yes, you can get a nook/kindle with a back light now and I would highly recommend that you do.

I also have a kindle that my mom gave me when she upgraded to the kindle fire. I love my kindle because it is so small and it is easy to carry everywhere with me, the only downside is that (like someone else said) to go back a few pages is harder to do then a device that you can use your finger (ipad, kindle fire etc). The regular kindle has buttons on the side that you use to change the page. After using an ipad for so long and then using a kindle it took me a little bit to get used to the fact that I can't touch the screen although I still find myself touching the screen to change the page.

You will need some internet access for the kindle to download books or to search books etc.

I love the kindle because I can get on amazon and look up books and download it onto my kindle from there. So some days I will download 5+ books. Also if you have amazon prime you can borrow one book every month from the amazon library for free and that is nice.

My mom had both a nook and a kindle and she preferred the kindle but I'm not sure why. I would try and find someone who has one of each and play around with it and see which you like more.

I would like a kindle fire-mainly for the fact that it's like a tablet and my husband doesn't like to share the ipad. But if you want something strictly for reading then the kindle and nook is the way to go.

If you are looking for free or discount books sign up for http://www.bookbub.com/ebook-deals

I LOVE THIS SITE. You can pick the genres that you like and just about every day it will send you a list of what books are free of extremely cheap that you can buy and you can have it sent directly to your device. I know you can do this for the nook but most of the stuff that I have seen is for the ipad or the kindle.

As for your eyes hurting when reading from a computer screen, I get that but with the kindle I don't have that problem. Also with the kindle and a tablet you can change the font size and make it bigger if you need to.

Hope this helps.

I have a Kobo (it is a Canadian eReader). I had all of the same concerns as you, but I am glad I have it. I do still take paper books to the pool, beach, bathtub and such, but I use my Kobo a lot too. I'm usually reading more than one book at a time, so I can have a paper book and a Kobo book going at the same time. When I go camping I have my book for the beach and my Kobo in the tent. Mine is a matt finish, so it is not shiny like a computer screen. The print can be adjusted to any size. My Kobo (Glo) can be backlit when I want it to be, so I can read in bed without turning on a light and waking my husband. I don't buy books for my Kobo, I just download books from the library for free.

I had a 1st generation Nook and now I have the Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light. I like them both (1st one charger insert died), but I'm still getting used to the new Nook. I still read regular books too--it varies. I like using both. I get books from the library when I can, but it's very nice to have books available at my finger tips if the library doesn't have them or there's a long wait for them. My husband got me my first Nook somewhat contrary to my wishes too, but I'm glad he did.

I love books, too, but the kindle is so much easier - our limited space is already overfilled with stuff, so not having books overflowing the shelves is a help, and the library is a pain, so we check books out on the kindle and they magically return themselves at the end of three weeks.

I have had a Nook Color for several months now. My grandchildren use it to play games. I have yet to download a book. I wish I had gotten just a reader because I think downloading would be easier. And the Kindle paper white page looks more like a book. My cousin has a Nook color and says it's easyto download and use. She likes hers.

I bought the Kindle so I could use it as a tablet. Since then I've used other Tablets (Samsung, Acer, and ipad) and like them much better. You can download books and movies on these tablets.

I'm also an avid reader and am considering getting a Kindle reader; not a tablet.

I LOVE my kindle (and I too resisted until last year). It's so convenient, and my library has tons of electronic books so I can always find something to read. And if you like to re-read classic books, you can get many of those for free from Amazon.

I do encourage Santa to buy you a paperwhite kindle, with the non-glare screen if computer screens bother your eyes. The Kindle Fire has a computer-like screen that may bother you, so you'll want to stay away from the Fire. The paperwhite uses a 'computer ink' with a completely non-glare screen. It is very easy on the eyes, and great for reading indoors OR outdoors. Also, you can adjust the font size on the screen, so it's a size that is comfortable for you.

You can also buy a nice, decorative, protective cover so you don't break it. :)
