We have altered our Christmas gift plans a bit and need to get our daughter a keyboard. There is a local shop that sells them (well 45 minutes away), but I'm sure they are pricey. Any ideas on a good place to get a decent keyboard? We'd like to have it come with a stand and a stool too!

Once you do your research on a range of models & prices... DO check out Amazon's Cyber Holiday Deals (changes weekly) AND cyber monday. I buy maybe 80% of my gifts from them during both periods, usually for 25% of the retail value the rest of the year (meaning paying $50 for a $200 Flip video camera, etc.). Music shops often do the same durn thing. ((Our $500 drum set we got for apx $100))
There is lots to consider online and with no shipping. So it's your best bet.
I got one for my daughter last year at BJs (like Costco) for $30 with a stand. It is a great starter keyboard. So I'd check Costco and Toys r us and just google keyboards with stand and stool. But we just use a folding chair so don't get hung up on the stool.
Depends on how high-end you need the keyboard to be.
I got a Casio for my daughter a few years ago from Best Buy (online, shipped for free) for about $200. I had to buy a stand for it and a plug in sustain pedal separately, but that only added about $40 to the cost. She doesn't sit when she plays, she actually prefers to put the stand tall and stand up. (She is 10). She is in her 3rd or 4th year playing.
The one I got is just shy of all the keys (I think it has 76 instead of 88 keys?), but the keys are weighted and pressure sensitive, so she gets a pretty good "real" feel when she plays it. It was a great "investment". We gave it to her as a Christmas gift also. :)
btw, I bought another one exactly like it from a different retailer for our church about a year later. The price was the same but for whatever reason it didn't come with a power cord. (Mine did, right in the box). So that had to be purchased separately.
Does it need to be new? We're looking for one for our daughter as well, for her birthday in January. If you don't mind used, check www.craigslist.org. It's hit or miss but you can usually get a good deal. We found a nice one that retails for about $800 and the guy is selling it for $200. He even posted demos of him playing it and it sounds great! Also, Musician's Friend is a good place to look and also Guitar Center; if you don't have storefronts in your area they both sell online.
